Failed Restraint

Sasuke felt like he was drowning.

Not the type of drowning where you don't know how to swim and keep frantically kicking and panicking in the water, no not that.

The type where it's like holding your breath underwater for too long as your lungs burn for air, like, as a competition of who can hold their breath the longest. That type, the one that makes you think I have to do this. That type that makes you want to win no matter what, because there's a grand prize waiting for the winner.

. . .

That's how Sasuke was feeling.

But the only prize waiting for him was seeing his best friend continue to be happy. He should suppress all of these feelings, all of these emotions and endearment he has for his friend and just let it go. It wouldn't be worth it.

Sasuke's too busy for a relationship. With all of his Uni work, with his 9-to-5 at the local coffee shop, and his recreational soccer season starting up, he just couldn't be in one. Especially with Naruto.

He knew that. It just wouldn't work.

Sasuke struggled with maintaining his friendships throughout his years; responding back to texts every 3 to 5 business days, ghosting and avoiding people on purpose just because he didn't feel like socializing, feeling lonely because he pushed everyone away because it was simply too much work. .

Well, not everyone. Somehow even through all of that, Naruto still managed to want to keep in contact with him. Somehow his blonde friend didn't throw away their years of friendship even though Sasuke grew increasingly distant. .

Naruto texted him almost everyday knowing that Sasuke could take days on end to reply, but obviously that didn't matter to Naruto.

But how could Sasuke maintain a romantic relationship if he couldn't even handle the basics of friendship?

Naruto didn't deserve that kind of treatment. That's why as of now, when Naruto had confessed to Sasuke his feelings and asked him on a date, Sasuke had to refuse. He didn't want to lose the last bit of friendship he still had, and respectfully he told Naruto all about how he was feeling but the blonde still insisted and that made it even harder for Sasuke to decline.
