Tristan rolled his eyes with a laugh he hoped sounded amused. "I have a heart."

"No, you don't. You're a nasty, lying, two-faced, greedy, egoistic opportunist," David accused.

"I'm a lawyer! That's my job," Tristan reminded him with a grin while he tried to ignore the disturbing stab his uncle's words caused him. "And that's the reason you asked me to be your successor, remember? I didn't ask you for this job, you offered it to me."

"I didn't offer it to you so you would fire my assistant," David countered.

"If your assistant wouldn't be so incompetent, I wouldn't have to fire him."

"I forbid you to fire him," David challenged him.

Tristan raised an amused eyebrow. "You gave up your rights to forbid me anything the moment you signed your position over to me."

His uncle smirked. "I know I did, but if you fire him, I'll call my sister."

"What?!" Tristan barked a laugh. "That's total blackmail."

"Mhm, so be a good boy and don't walk around firing people," David said cheerfully while Tristan shook his head.

"If that kid screws up, I'm firing him no matter what my mother has to say about it." And Tristan was certain that sooner or later he would; hopefully sooner. He had no idea how he was supposed to work with that guy running around here all the time.

"Kid? He's the same age as you." David laughed.

"Well, he looks ten years younger," Tristan grumbled, well remembering how old Warren was.

"Yes, that's probably because he doesn't smoke and drink as much as you do. And he probably eats healthier too... And sleeps more," David said wisely.

"What?" Tristan asked in disbelief. "I live healthy. Alright, so I smoke, but I barely drink, I go to the gym regularly, I eat healthy and I sleep at least 4 hours a night."

"4 hours? No wonder you look ten years older than Warren..." David shook his head.

"I don't look old for my age!" Tristan defended outraged. "Warren just looks insanely young. No one would guess him older than 20."

"Yeah, but no one would guess you under 30," David said pointedly.

"I'm turning 28 in 4 months - no one can tell the difference between 28 and 30. Come on," Tristan growled.

"Yeah, but if you would sleep more than 4 hours a night-"

"Are we honestly having this conversation because of Warren? Fine, I won't fire him, I promise!" Tristan groaned loudly.

David grinned brightly. "Wonderful then! Shall I continue telling you of our clients?"

Tristan growled. How was he supposed to stand his annoying uncle an entire week before he could actually get some work done? And how was he supposed to get some work done with Warren around?!
Why hadn't he stayed in Germany? Or at least, why hadn't he gone to his hotel last night instead of coming down to the firm where he had met that damn guy who was going to ruin his career if he couldn't come up with a valid reason to fire him.

He did want to fire him, didn't he?

Of course he did. It wasn't his problem that the boy would end up unemployed... Maybe get evicted from his apartment because he couldn't pay for it anymore... Whatever. That was Warren's fault, not Tristan's.

~*~

It had taken Warren all morning to sort through the files and bring the 16 boxes filled with them up to the last floor, where they were now neatly piled next to Jennings's office door. Warren had been too scared to bring them in because he didn't want to run into his new boss. He still couldn't believe that that was the same man. Warren was, without a doubt, the unluckiest person in the whole world. Someone up there hated him for sure. What had he done to deserve something so awful?! All he had wanted was to meet the love of his life...
