What was going on? Why did mister Tanner want to eat something so utterly far away? Surely, he wasn't doing that just because of the food, right? Or were those tacos seriously so unimaginably better than other tacos?
No way... Tanner was such a busy person - why would he waste an entire hour just to get tacos? Two hours, actually - they also had to drive home after all.
Carefully, Warren glanced over at the man next to him, who saw him looking so Warren quickly averted his gaze again.
"So, do you want to plant anything other than your tomato?" Tanner asked casually, breaking the short silence they had had since they left the nursery a minute ago.
"Is there anything I can plant in my apartment?" In fact, Warren really wanted to, he just didn't think he could.
"Not very well, but you can plant something else on my terrace," the other man offered cheerfully.
Why was he always so nice?
"Don't you need the space there?" It's not like Warren didn't want to, he was just very confused as to why his boss was making such an offer. And why they had just spent the entire morning together, shopping for gardening stuff. And why the hell they were driving an entire hour just for tacos.
"It's a big terrace. Definitely big enough for an urban garden that we can both use." Tanner shrugged, still in his earlier, cheerful and casual fashion.
"Urban garden? Did you just make that up?" Warren asked with a laugh.
Tanner gave a loud laugh. "No! That's what it's called. Urban gardening is plants in city areas. Mostly on rooftops or balconies."
"Seriously? That's a thing?" Warren had never heard of this before.
"Yes. It's a thing. Lots of people have a small, urban garden. Usually, it's not enough to be fully self-sustainable, of course, but it's still better than having to buy everything all the time." Tanner shrugged as they turned right into a smaller street.
Warren gave him a skeptical look. His boss was so different from what he had initially thought. Something he had already realized a while ago, but the more he learned, the more obvious it became.
"My point was that there's plenty of space on the terrace, so if you want to plant something other than tomatoes, you could."
"I want to plant an eggplant," Warren stated firmly.
Tanner raised an amused eyebrow. "But you do know that's not where eggs come from, right?"
Now it was Warren's turn to laugh loudly. "Shut up!" He slapped Tanner's arm lightly before remembering that the man next to him wasn't his friend, but his boss.
Warren was about to apologize as they suddenly turned right again, and a small airport came into view.
A moment later, Tanner pulled into the parking lot.
"There's a Mexican restaurant here?" Warren asked slowly. Except it hadn't been a one-hour drive, but only around 5 minutes.
"No. It's a bit farther." Tanner opened all 4 car windows a small crack after parking, and then exited the car without any further explanation.
Warren swallowed excitedly. There was no way they were there for the reason he thought, right? Of course not.
But then why were they getting out of the car?
Quickly, he jumped out of the car and then followed Tanner towards the building.
"Why are we at the airport?" Warren whispered urgently.
"Well, we can also drive to the tacos if you want, but San Diego is 3 hours by car." Tanner frowned. "I think we should just fly."
