Love Just Kinda Happens

The moment Kanji has been dreading has finally arrived. His trembling hand grips the doorknob leading to his bedroom. He has had Naoto in there before, why is this time so nerve wracking. Naoto gripping his hand tight isn't making the nerves calm any more. With one desperate turn he opens the door to his room.

Inside is just as he left it. His clothes and work area packed away, bed made up straight, and a lovely dinner laid out on the small table in the corner. Wait, that wasn't there before. Yet now there is no mistaking it, a place setting of California rolls on either side of the table. This must be why Yosuke was asking him what food Naoto liked this morning. No sense looking a gift horse in the mouth.

"I must say Kanji. You certainly thought ahead for this. You even got my favorite food."

"Y-Yeah, I figured you'd want something good to eat for Christmas."

"Well I certa-" her words are cut short by her stomach growling. Naoto tries to cover her face in embarrassment, "I'm so sorry, I have not eaten today."

"Why ain't ya eatin? You'll make yourself sick like that," the warmth in Kanji's voice tickles Naoto.

She stares at her feet, "I was concerned about fitting into this dress."

"O-Oh. Well you don't gotta worry now, so eat up."

The two walk over to the table. Each takes off their shoes and sits facing each other. Sitting in a dress is uncomfortable and odd, but the taste of the food makes up for it. Naoto tries hard to not scarf down the food by the handful. All the magazines say that it isn't 'ladylike' to do that. The food itself isn't anything spectacular overall, but something about the atmosphere just makes it so much better. By the time she finishes her food, Kanji has already finished his food twice over. The brute doesn't seem to read the same magazines.

Kanji has a big grin on his face, "Felt good to eat, huh?"

"It was delicious Kanji-kun."

"I'm glad you liked it. I-I'm honestly really glad you are here."

"I'm happy to be here. You are a very accommodating host."

Kanji laughs nervously. Springing to his feet he quickly says, "O-Oh yeah, lemme get you your gift."

As he goes to rummage through his desk, Naoto shifts uncomfortably. Of course he got her a gift, but this just increases her nerves. What if her gift isn't good enough? It isn't anything amazing. Kanji comes back with a small box, and sits across from her again.

Naoto feels a rush of boldness, "Kanji?"

"Yeah?"

"Perhaps it would be easier if I sat on that side of the table next to you. It's awfully cold, but with you between me and your window, I might warm up."

"O-Oh s-sure," He stutters in response.

She gets up and circles around the table. A sense of pride washes over her as she sits down next to Kanji. It was rather clever to come up with that window excuse to snake her way next to him. Although it wasn't all lies, she is a bit chilly.

Kanji looks her in the eye and shoves the box into her arms, "T-Take it...and Merry Christmas."

The box itself is rather intricate. Gold trimmings around a pink and red box creates this elegant look. Naoto almost feels guilty ripping it open. Her fingers shake as she tears into the package in a dainty way so as to not show her intense excitement. Finally, the top of the box pops off revealing the gift inside.

Sitting at the bottom of the box is a stuffed rabbit. The immaculate detail makes it look like a cartoon come to life. The rabbit itself is dressed in a rather familiar outfit: blue plaid pants, a button up coat, and a familiar blue cap. Naoto blushes as she lifts the rabbit out of the box, staring into its button eyes.
