(Zoe's POV)

Hello everyone, I'm Zoe Lee. I'm 13 years old and about to start high school. I have no idea what to expect, and I'm already feeling anxious.

Okay, I know you're already getting bored, but this isn't a typical story. Let me explain. I have a stepsister named Chloè. She's a bully, snobby, and rich. She doesn't even know what kindness is, and I'm forced to pretend to be someone else just to be accepted by someone and not feel excluded by everyone...

Well, not everyone, there's one person who I believe truly cares about me for who I am—Chloè's best friend, Lila. She seemed like the only one who cared about me, and she's the person I care about the most. But then why did I say, "I believe she cares about me for who I am?" Because she's a fake and manipulative person with others, and she does everything to get what she wants. But with me, she seems different, she seems kinder. I hope she's not just fooling me...

While I was lost in thought, I arrived at the Dupain Cheng bakery. I had gone there to get some pastries to cheer up Lila, who was feeling down. As soon as I entered, I saw a girl carrying a crate of apples. At one point, she bumped into me, and both she and the apples fell to the ground.

"Oh, sorry," the girl said.

"Zoe," I replied.

"Sorry, Zoe. I love your look! Where are you from?" she asked.

"I'm from New York! I'm here to get some sweets for my best friend, who came with me from there."

I came with Lila from New York to move here. I didn't have an easy time in middle school; they started treating me badly because I tried to be myself. I hope things are different here...

"I'm glad! Just remember, as long as you're with people who care about you, it will never be a bad journey," the girl said.

At that moment, some of the girl's apples fell. She bent down to pick them up and said, "Your sneakers are fantastic! Did you write those things yourself?" (There was "I ♡ you" written on them.)

"Thank you! I wrote all the nice things people have said to me on my shoes so I can remember them," I said.

"But there's only one thing written here," the girl remarked.

"Because I only had one friend," I replied.

"Oh... Well, now you have another one! By the way, I haven't introduced myself yet! I'm Marinette Dupain Cheng, nice to meet you," Marinette said.

"Thank you, Marinette. It means a lot to me! So, which pastry do you recommend?" I asked.

At that point, she picked some macarons and croissants and wrapped them for me.

"Here! If you want, we can meet up for a walk or something one of these days," Marinette said.

"Why not? Whenever you want!" I replied.

"Then I'll write down my number!" Marinette said, writing her number on an envelope.

"Where should I write it?" I asked.

She handed me her hand and a marker.

"That way, you won't lose it for sure!" Marinette said.

I wrote down the number and left. I was happy because I had found a new friend, maybe someone who would truly care about me for who I really am? Nah, that's just a silly utopia...
