chapter VIII.

The morning was hectic. I felt like I had a hangover, they didn't find Rowan's body and I had to talk to the Sheriff. I would've much rather layed in my bed.
We were walking through the school halls. Wednesday was bickering with Sheriff Galpin, while I waddled with Weems behind them.
"Get a good look at this monster thing?", Galpin asked.
"It didn't stick around for a chat."
"Well actually it did.", Sheriff raised a brow, while the miss glared at me. Yep, should've kept my mouth shut.
They ignored my comment and kept on talking until we reached the office.

"My guess is that Rowan ran away. State troopers have put out an alert and I've contacted his family, but they haven't heard from him either.", Weems walked around her office.
"Dead people are notoriously bad at returning calls.", facts.
"What were you doing out in the woods with him, Ms. Adams?", The Sheriff is getting annoyed with her attitude.
"I heard a noise in the forest and went to go investigate. That's when I stumbled upon the attack."
"And you?"
"I just went after the miss."
"Then what?"
"Adreanna passed out, I ran into Bianca Barclay and told her to go for help. Next thing I remember I was awakening in my dorm.", and I woke up in pain.
"And just to be clear, this monster wasn't a bear or some other wild animal?"
"We've hibernated with grizzlies. We know the difference.", it was a very interesting experience.
"Thank you, Sheriff. I think Miss Addams is done now.", Weems doesn't look comfortable near Galpin.
"Actually, I would like to speak to Sheriff Galpin. Alone.", oh come on.

"I'm not sure I can allow that."
"I'm sure I could take her to the station and get a formal statement."
There was a moment of silence.
"Yeah, let's go."
"Fine. You have five minutes and everything is off the record. Play nice... or I will call the mayor.", and with that she left. I turned around to follow her but the miss stopped me.
"You stay."
"Of course. I apologize.", I bowed.
I would've rather left but ok.
"Someone is trying to cover up Rowan's murder. That's the only reason to scrub the crime scene.", Wednesday got straight to the point.
"Is that your professional opinion as the daughter of a murderer?"
"My father is twice the man you are and the only thing he murders is the occasional opera in the shower.", that is very true.
"It's been a long night. I'm tired of your games."
"I'm not playing games. I'm telling the truth. You wanna reject my claims, but you can't."
"Why is that."
"Because you and I both know there's a monster out there. And Rowan is his latest victim.", and me, I also know about the monster. I'm also pretty sure I've seen it somewhere before.
Then another policeman came inside.
"Sheriff, I think you're gonna wanna see this."

The door opened and there stood Rowan. Intact, no blood. At first I thought I was going totally insane, but then it suddenly started to make sense. I smirked under my mask as I hurried to him.
"Oh my god. You are alive. I was so worried. I must have really been hallucinating. I'm so glad nothing happened to you.", I pretended to be worried about him, before I whispered into his ear.
"Give Rowan's father my condolences."
He flinched a bit, but kept the act.
Meanwhile Wednesday looked completely shocked. I smirked and walked out of the office.

While the miss was at Dr. Kinbott's, I decided to look around the school some more.
I noticed a passage from the quad to a statue of Edgar Allan Poe. When i got to it no-one was around so i sat down under it to admire the craftsmanship. I looked up and saw that he was holding a book with a strange watermark on its cover.
If I remembered correctly it was on the picture Rowan showed us, before the monster killed him. Standing up i looked inside to find some writing.
After reading through them I came to the conclusion that it was a riddle. But not just one riddle.
Each line was a separate one. Now I regretted not bringing a paper with me, but my memory will have to do. 

"The opposite of the moon." Sun.

"A world between ours." Nether.

"Two months before June." April.

"A self-seeding plant." Pansy

"One more than one." Two.

"Its leaves weep to the ground." Willow.

"It melts in the sun." Ice.

"Its beginning and end never found." Circle.

"Every rule has one." Exception.

"The answer will give a sharp cracking sound."

Hah... alright interesting. The first letter of each word, together spelling the phrase "snap twice". By doing so the raven in Poe's other hand started to move.
Behind the statue opened up a hidden passage. Going down the stairs I found myself in what looked like a library. Honestly it looked pretty cool. On the floor was a flower with a skull shape, the Nightshade. Probably after the club that madam Morticia and mister Gomez were apart off in their school years.
Although it got disbanded when a normie kid, Garrett Gates, died at the academy.
Sadly before i got a good look at the surroundings I heard voices not far from me. I quickly hid behind one of the pillars and slowly merged into its shadow.
I don't use my power often, only in emergencies or convenient times. I have umbrakinesis. It's the ability to manipulate shadow. Other than that I can also travel through it. 
Two people I have seen before with Bianca walked through the hall, in the direction of the stairs. I only hoped the secret door closed itself.

"I heard Bianca is thinking of inviting another member to the Nightshades.", so I was right.
"Really? Do you know who it's gonna be?"
"Yes and you're not going to believe it."
"Don't tell me it's the new girl Wednesday, who claims to have seen Rowan getting killed."
"No, but you're close."
"Her maid?"
"Apparently yes."
"Well she doesn't sound so bad. What I heard is that she is actually very nice, but not very talkative."
"I heard that she is a trained assasin, although we both know that we can't trust the rumors. We'll just have to see for ourselves."
"Yeah. I'm kinda excited to get a new member."

And with that they were gone. No way I'm joining their super secret boyband. Anyways I have wasted enough time. The miss should be getting here any minute.
I looked around in the shadow trying to find a spot, where I could teleport without having to use the secret entrance. I found one under some stairs outside with no-one nearby.
Taking a step, I saw the so-called school backyard. I noticed Enid working on her canoe for the Poe Cup, that is taking place in the next day or so. She noticed me standing there and waved at me to come to her.
With that I spent the next half hour painting the boat. When Wednesday came she asked Enid about Rowan.
I kept my mouth shut about the hidden library. It would be more fun seeing her discover it herself.
She let me have the rest of the day off, which surprised me, but I didn't mind. I decided to visit some of the clubs to pick out my extracurricular activity.

I was writing the chapters on my phone, when suddenly this one wouldn't open.
I sadly lost it and had to rewrite it again.
It was frustrating ಥ⁠‿⁠ಥ
