True colours can come in all shapes and sizes
10th September, 1976
A light breeze whistled across my face as I followed Regulus Black out of the big castle. He was far away, since he had walked from the great hall earlier than me, but I could see him down by the black lake.
Why he hasn't found a better place to hide, I don't know.
When I got closer to him, I could see he was sitting on the ground up against a big oak tree. There was a bunch of trees all around the Black lake, so why he still picked the most visible one, is really just dumb on his part.
"What a hiding place you have found"
He looked up at me, but did not meet my eyes. He just turned his head towards the lake again.
"I had to make sure you could find me"
"What" I said. This was absurd.
"I had to make sure you could find me. I saw you looking at me in the great hall" He said like it was nothing. I blushed. He had caught me looking at him. That is so fucking embarrasing.
"I was hoping your offer for a talk still counted" He finished, like i hadn't just been going through the five stages of grief for my own pride.
"Okay" I said nodding, still trying to process it all. "Not to sound insecure or pick me in any way, but why do you wanna talk with me? You don't like me." I tried to say as normally as I could to match his tone, but I couldn't hide the bit of confusion I felt.
"Because no matter what I say, it's your word against mine. I can tell you whatever I want. It's not gonna have any effect on either of our lives because none of us has that power over the other's family and homes. I can't do that with many people."
Good point. He can't hurt me. We have the same power over each other. We're equal.
"And also," He continued quietly, like he had yet to decide if he actually wanted to finish his sentence
"You're tolerable. And you seem trustworthy. I have seen you talk with the first years when they get homesick" That was true. I had spent a whole lot of last year helping first years with their homework, and talked with them if they got homesick and needed a hug.
But right now I just stood quietly absorbing it all.
"Well scotch over then," He did, and I sat down next to him, with enough space though to make sure we didn't touch each other. "Do you have a cigarette?" I asked. I need something I could occupy myself with.
"Do you smoke that shit?" he exclaimed. That was the truest thing I had ever heard him say. The none concealed surprise in his eyes were hilarious in itself. It was so raw i don't even think he had thought about it before he asked.
"Sometimes. It not that big of a deal, everybody does it"
He just looked at me for a second before he started ruffeling around his pockets, before he found a pack of cigarettes.
"I guess you're right - everybody does it." He said, lighting his own cigarette before passing the match to me.
"So I'm gonna assume you wanna talk about your brother. That is why we are here, right?"
"Yeah, that is why."
And so he did. I don't know how long we sat there, and honestly, for once in my life, I didn't care. This once he just talked, and all I had to do was listen, while watching the sunset on the horizon.
He talked about how horrible it had been that night. He didn't want to go into details, but his mother had used some ugly curses on Sirius.
He talked about how it eventually just had become too much for Sirius and he couldn't take anymore.
