"Carmen!" My brother called as I threw the door open from our hair salon. Our house was just upstairs in the same building. We had got in an argument, something we don't do very often. "¡Carmen, Regresa porfavor!" He chased after me his blue hood blew off his head at the speed he was running, "come back to the house! Honestly what are you going to do?"
"José, I told you already I'm tired of going around in the shadows! I want to be noticed I want to get out! I can't take it anymore, being a caged bird it's just not for me!" I pushed off of him as he tried to grab me back.
"Carmen what are you talking about, people notice you!"
"That's not what I mean José, I mean other people aside from our common customer at the salon, I want the big people to notice me. I don't want to be just the pretty little flower trapped in a glass case and put in the dark alright?!""Aye, Carmen I still don't understand, what bigger people? You want a rich guy to come and sweep you off your feet or something eh? You've been in those romance novellas again? Things like that don't actually happen Carmen! Besides what would you need all the money for, what do you want that you already don't have here? You have family... It may be small, and not a lot to offer but we're here y'know. We care for you... I don't want you going off with just any stranger, y'know it's dangerous out there for a flower."
"I don't expect you to understand José, you're a man that goes out looking all duro in your street clothes. You go to you're rap battles and hang out with your friends at the corner. You're out in the world with every chance for something to happen to you and where am I? At home. With nothing but the back of people's heads to braid all fuckin day. I'm tired of it, I don't want to be a flower anymore okay! I'm done."
".... So, you're quitting?"
"I don't know José, okay? I don't know." I shrugged fixing my purse on my shoulder and walking away down the street.
"But where are you going!? When are you coming back!?" He called again down the street.
"I don't know!!" I screamed back. It's true I didn't know where I was going, or if I wanted to come back. At the moment I never wanted to see that house again, but then the thought of my brother worried and pacing the floor with out knowing if I was okay or not had me on a quick guilt trip. But I couldn't turn back now, I'd just give him a call when ever I find my way to a store or something. What the hell, I came out here for an adventure to actually get into trouble, to do something!! I could care less about anyone's money, José is right about one thing, everything I want I have already, and most of it is things money can't buy, like a close family. But I just want someone to take notice of me, I've been treated like a child for so long, I'm 22 already! It's bad enough our small Island of Puerto Rico is over looked by many, and then to be called a Common Wealth country... It makes me feel so insignificant, a tiny invisible dot in the world. So I made it to a bar! You might think it's a wrong move but then you must have never drank at a bar, because alcohol is expensive and you gotta be a somebody to afford all of that 'drunken good times'. Again I'm not after the money I swear, It's the high position I'm looking for. Maybe some famous actor or something, someone who is well off in society to actually look at a fellow human being no matter their status in society. It's a long shot I know, but maybe if drunk enough their impaired judgment could lend a hand?
So I finally find myself at The Mist in San Juan off the coast. Since it was a tourist attraction of the island I figured u had a better chance of seeing anyone. Again I wasn't exactly sure what I was looking for in this ideal kind of person. I was at this point 'winging' it, and trying not to fail or get into serious trouble. Because it was so popular you couldn't get in with out a reservation!! Ugh of course, I didn't think to think about that detail and now the bouncer is blocking my way inside.
Think Carmen think! Maybe you can charm your way in. "I'm with someone inside!" I pleaded.
"Yeah sure, they must have not wanted you inside that bad then." The bouncer grumbled not even budging. Of course that's the oldest trick in the book, I have to think harder!
"I'm coming in for a job application?" I said the thought out loud.
"Sorry, this isn't 'that' kind of bar." He grunted.
"WHAT?!"
"Señorita I'm going to have to ask you to leave now, or I'm gonna make you leave."
Fine I give up, that was impossible anyway... But just as I turn around there is a young man in his twenties with short blond hair and stringing green eyes. His eye brows were a little thick, enough to be noticed but on him I guess it suited him well. He walked up to the club right past me like I never existed... Of course.
"¡Oye Señor!" My hand reached out and grabbed his white sleeve to the collared shirt. He turned around to my surprise actually quite calm, "eh, um listen... C-can I get in with you?"
He gave a gentle smile to me, "Meeting some one inside, or just here to snoop around?" He's got a British accent.
"To uh.. Just to look around." I admitted.
"Alright, s'long as we're honest here." He hooked his arm with mine walking back up to the club,"you know, if you were going to come you should have worn a better attire..."
"I didn't." I grumbled looking down at my short jean shorts and covered tube top with a half shirt tied at the middle and my regular dusty sneakers walking in sync with his shiny black dress shoes.
"My love you'll stick out like a soar thumb." He chuckled finally in front of the bouncer again.
"You again!?" He recognized me immediately.
"Pardon, she's with me though not on the list but we can make an arrangement yeah?" He pulled out a ton of cash from his back pocket, I swear I was going to faint from seeing so much green worth value.
"She's worth this much to you?" The bouncer even got a dry mouth with the amount in his hands.
"What sort of bloody question is that mate? Besides I'd dish out more if I hadn't left it at home, can't give up my whole country now can I? Every woman should hold a high value to a man, now may we enter please this is a special occasion for us."
"Go ahead..." He opens the door for us as the Englishman walked me part way inside.
"Wow that was some skill señor.. But did you really use all the money you had? Because I'll have to find some way to--"
"Don't think too much of it my lady, now I think it's time we went our separate ways yeah?" He unhooked my arm from his.
"Oh uh yeah okay, wait you said you can't give up your country? Are you a prince or something?"
"Haha, or something..." He winked taking a bow, "pleasure to have met you ma'am." And with that he disappeared in the crowd.
