I sat on the floor beside my bed with the covers pulled around my shoulders. I had opened the window and was staring at the moons in the sky. There was a soft breeze that blew inside, cooling the room. I was cold, but the fresh air was calming and I just didn't want to get up to close it. It was completely quite and there was not a single voice in the hallway. I finally heard a door creak open and then close before there was a small tap on my door.
I stood up to open it quickly, but a little too eagerly, and fell back down with the blanket wrapped around my ankle. I picked the blanket up and carried it with me to the door.
I opened it slowly at first, scared that it wouldn't be Usari, but to my relief, it was. He stood in the doorway with his hair slightly damp, fresh from the bath, without his formal clothes on.
"Am I interrupting something?" he asked. There was a slight grin on his face as he looked down at me with the blanket tangled around me and a few loose strands of hair covering my face. I laughed realizing how ridiculous I probably looked.
I grabbed Usari's hand and pulled him into my room, closing and locking the door behind him. I threw my arms around his waist before he could object and sat there for a long moment, just listening to his heartbeat, which sounds no different than mine.
I felt his hand against my chest and looked down to see him holding the necklace he had given me in his hand. There was a small smile on his face. I asked him what was going to happen and he responded with his own questions that he didn't have answers to. I had hoped that seeing Usari again would clear up the whole situation but it was clear now that things wouldn't be that easy.
I stopped talking and we only stood there for a long while, like nothing else mattered. It was late and there were still couldn't hear anyone else outside the door. I figured everyone must be asleep by now, even the servants, and that we were safe at the moment.
Suddenly Usari pulled away from me. He stood there with his hands on my shoulders and an almost terrified face. "Alexander, do you love me?"
I almost couldn't answer because the question was so sudden. "Y-yes, I do love you. Very much. What's wrong ?"
Usari's face softened slightly and he averted his eyes from mine. "This may sound rash, and I never imagined doing something like this...but" he paused for a moment.
"What is it Usari?" I asked.
"You do not have to answer right now. I understand if you think it a horrible idea. I was just thinking about this but I was scared to ask since you might not like it. It may even make you angry and I'd like to apologize in advance if it does. Trust me when I say that this is merely a thought. I do not even have permission to do this."
"Usari!" I yelled. "Sorry, but you know can ask me anything. I swear I won't get mad."
Usari sighs a little and finally looks back to me. "I know that things are done slightly different on Earth than they are here, but I figure that relationships are handled the same. So would you like to entwine?"
"Excuse me?"
"Come together?"
"Are you talking about sex?"
"No! That is not it! I am trying to think of the word that you would use for it. Union?"
I finally think that I figured out what he was trying to say. "Are you asking if I'd like to get married?"
"Yes! That is it." Usari sighs in relief. "So, would you like to get married?"
I didn't know what to say. When I left Earth all of those months ago, possibly getting married was not on my 'To-Do' list. I really did love Usari though, and I would have loved to been married right then in there, but I didn't think that it would be possible with our current situation. "Usari, I would love to. But I'm not sure how you plan to work this out. I think Wetam would rather see me dead right now."
"If we are legally together then there is nothing that he can do about it. I also think that if I can just talk to him that I could convince him that it is a good thing"
"How exactly do you plan to do that?" I asked him.
"Well, he is afraid that us being together would create some kind of scandal or conflict with the people, but if we are married then it could be seen as our cultures growing closer together." Usari said with excitement.
"That does make sense, I can see how that would work."
"Then it is agreed on? You do not have to say yes to this."
I grabbed Usari's cheeks and pulled his face closer to mine. I kissed him before he could say another word. If it meant that we could be together than I would have done anything.
