CHAPTER 1

Eriss's POV

I pulled my heavy cart with one arm while the other held my blue umbrella. Trudging through the grey slush on the sidewalk, I made my way to the laundromat. I blinked as snowflakes got behind my glasses and melted on my eyelashes. I greatly resembled an eskimo with my massive parka, and my brown scarf expertly wrapped around the lower half of my face. Every breath tunneled up my scarf and fogged my glasses up. I desperately wanted to wipe my glasses off, but my hands were too full.

Looking up from my black snow boots I saw the laundromat a few steps ahead of me. I made a bee-line for the foggy door that read- "Lang's Laundromat". Once I was under the awning, I closed my umbrella. I backed up into the door while pulling the cart in with me. Suddenly I felt the presence of the door disappear from behind me. Turning my head slightly to the right I saw who came to my aid.

  "Mr.Lang!" I said in surprise.

"Long time no see! You been wearing same underwear?!" Mr.Lang said jokingly with a smile on his face.

"No," I said as I gave him a half-hearted attempt at a stern look. "I've just been a bit busy lately."

"I saved your spot for you," Mr.Lang said as he pointed to the corner where I usually washed my clothes.

"Aww, thank you!" I said while giving him my brightest smile.

Mr. and Mrs.Lang have owned this laundromat for over 10 years. I've only been going here for two though. When I first moved to Brooklyn, they were pretty much my first friends in the neighborhood. Mr and Mrs.Lang immigrated from Hong Kong in the late 90's, so they've been in the neighborhood for a long time.

I began to unpack my cart and fill the washing machines. Darks, lights, whites, and delicates. After putting in the clothes I went over to the counter to get some quarters. Walking up to the counter I noticed someone leaning back in the chair with their feet propped up, and their face covered with a news paper. I tapped on the window. "Hello?" I called out.

"Hellooo? Can I get some change please?" I knocked on the window again, yet there was still no reply from the sleeping person. Sighing in frustration I looked around the laundromat. Everyone was milling around quietly waiting for their clothes to finish. I saw Mr.Lang repairing a machine, and Mrs.Lang was restocking the vending machine. I banged on the window again, this time with more force.

"HELLO?" I said loudly. The person finally stirred, pulling their feet off the counter, and straightening up in the chair. Removing the open book from their face the person rubbed their eyes. Now looking down at me was a cute asian guy. He looked like he was around 25 and his messy hair was an auburn color. He had full lips and his eyelashes were long and thick.

Yawning and barely opening his eyes he said, "How may I help you?"

Barely able to conceal my agitation I said, "May I please have change for a five?" At the sound of my voice he seemed to perk up. He gave curious look for what seemed like forever.
