What She Left Behind

Chapter 4

He turned around to look at me.

"What business is it of yours?" He asks, turning to walk away. I grabbed his arm.

"Wait! Hannah's my best friend. Somebody told me that you two had a relationship for a little while, and I just wanted to confirm that the rumors were true, and try to figure out why Hanna didn't tell me about it." I said quickly.

Dylan studied me for a minute. Then, he replied, "Well, if you really want to know, it is true. I don't know why Hanna didn't tell you about it, but if I were you, I would be careful with her." With that, he turned and walked out of the school, leaving me standing there, puzzled. Why would I have to be careful around Hanna? She's such a good person. Still, something big must have happened to make him that her. He was talking like he couldn't even stand to think about her, never mind talk to her best friend.

Later, I texted Hanna.

Me: Hey Han! I talked to the kid I told you about the other day. You dated him? Why didn't you tell me??? Text me ASAP!!!!!!

She responded right away.

Hanna: You talked to Dylan? Why? I told you not to be worried!! He's not important!

Me: Yeah, I know, but I still had to figure out what was wrong! Why didn't you tell me that summer? And what HAPPENED between you two? AND, why did he tell me to be careful around you?

After a few minutes, I finally got the response.

Hanna: Fine. I didn't tell you because I knew you would freak out. I mean he's a nobody, and you would want to find out everything about him. I didn't want to freak him out. And nothing big happened, it just wasn't working out, OK?

Me: Okay, if that's what you say. I have to go, but I will see you tomorrow, right?

Hanna: Of course! See you.

I knew Hanna was lying about the part about nothing happening, and I noticed how she conveniently forgot to answer the question about why he said to be careful around her. I now knew that I definitely couldn't get it out of Hanna, and Dylan wouldn't tell me everything. Time to go freak people out and question more of them. I guess I can kinda see why Hanna thought I would creep Dylan out. But still!
