(A/N: Can someone help me come up with a better name for this chapter? I struggle with naming stuff :/ )
Darkness. I tried to blink my eyes, but I all could see, smell, touch: utter darkness.
I found myself laying down on my back, the oppressive silence threatening to pierce my ear drums and paralyze me against the ground. I tried feeling around with my hands, searching for a source of light. My fingers came across a sturdy object. I pushed against it, forcing all of my free weight against its side.
No change in scenery.
I then positioned myself on my hands and knees, trying to achieve more leverage. I pushed down on the object and it suddenly collapsed, retreating into the ground and producing a satisfying CLICK when it reached it's destination.
At first, I sensed no change. Then, suddenly, a large window appeared before my eyes, gazing out onto a moonlit landscape. The milky white stars dotted the sky surrounding the ivory moon, protruding at different angles and radiating varying intensities of light. The window itself was a basic four-paned, white trimmed structure, casting a soft, white glow of light through the glass onto my face, illuminating two nondescript, shadowy figures laying on a grassy hill, beneath a wispy weeping-willow tree. A light breeze ruffled the grass and branches, producing the illusion of a wave passing through the scene. Allowing me to focus on the figures themselves, my mind experienced a sense of peace. Slowly, the figures, now magnified for my view, were two people, laying on a plush picnic blanket, staring into the expansive sky.
One of the figures, though both being of undetermined genders, slowly turned their head, murmuring a delicate hymn of words to the other, gently nuzzling up against them and leaning their head into the crook of the other's neck. I was able to make out a soft kiss being placed on the second person's cheek, sending a warm sensation through me, as if I had been kissed myself. The two bodies eventually fell asleep in the same position, legs and arms intertwined, both chests rising to a slow and steady tempo.
Almost instinctually, my body began to fatigue from the euphoric sight. My eyelids drew together like weakened magnets, slowly concealing my irises from the gentle, incandescent sky. My nose overflowed with an incense of rosemary and lavendar, the chorus of soft, pitter-pattering rain humming in my ears.
Laying down, I pictured the beautiful couple's threaded fingers once more, feeling a sense of calm wash over me. As my head brushed the ground, I became swept away into the ethereal bliss.
~~~
"Justin! Justin, dude, wake up!"
A hand was nudging my shoulder, snapping me awake from my dream. My head felt swollen and was throbbing painfully. I woke up with my mouth drowning in a puddle of my own drool, having already seeped into my papers and distorting what little writing I had marked there previously. I pried my eyes open to a classroom full of hunched over teenagers, the sounds of frantic scribbling and paper-shuffling occupying the relatively quiet classroom. A bolt of pain shot through my skull, causing me to blink a few times in order to be able to see into the daylight. I grimaced, and sleepily gazed over to the empty teacher's desk, then over to my right, from which the nudging came. It was my best friend, Jake. He bore a scowl upon his soft-featured face, showcasing wispy brown hair strewn across his forehead, yet retaining piercing blue orbs for eyes. I peered silently at him for a moment, then spoke.
"What in the hell," I whispered with a playful grin, "do you want?"
"Dude, don't bullshit with me. You and I both know you gotta finish this test with at least a 75 if you want to pass this class," he replied seriously.
"Whoa, someone's testy. Didn't know you cared about me so much, Jakey." I smirked, reciting the nickname that produces a slight blush upon his squirrel-like cheeks. It lasted for a moment, then dissipated. I put aside the thought as he continued the exchange.
"W-well, at least SOMEONE cares about your lame-ass future. God..."
He tapered off, glancing back at his test. I continued to admire my handiwork at being able to embarrass my friend so easily, then returned to my own test. I stole a quick look at the digital clock above the classroom door.
*Eight forty-five. Damn it, I'm not even close to finishing this damn calculus test.*
I scowled at the third problem, debating whether or not a derivative of zero would be the answer to the problem.
(A/N: Alright, I'll just say it: I KNOW a derivative of zero isn't actually a thing, I just wanted to highlight Justin's mathematical disability. )
Slowly, however, my eyes began to droop, as my mind, reeling in frustration, gradually shut out all noise and stimulating sensations.
As my brain sedated itself into a peaceful tempo, my mind wandered to Jake's blushing face once again.
"Heaven made us who we are, what we are, just for each other," the words my mother used to say to me, right before I went to bed, trailing out of mouth, inaudible to the naked ear. Right before I succumbed to the appealing drowsiness, I stole a glimpse of Jake's face glancing at me. Luckily, he didn't catch my eyes. Only, with this experience, his normally hardened stare of ice-cold daggers was much softer, and kinder. His eyes transformed into what felt like a lukewarm blanket, gently hugging and caressing my heart with their gaze. What were sharp, deadly icicles now melted into a single body of water; a calm sea, full of excitement, life, and peaceful rocking into the horizon.
Anchoring that tender feeling to my mind, I began to recount the dream I so longed to feel again, now with Jake's loving embrace engraved upon my heart...
A/N: Right, so...
This is my least favorite of the chapters I've made, tbh.I honestly think it's too short, ESPECIALLY for being a first chapter.
Idk tho. What do you guys think?
Thanksssssssss!
