Jungkook : *doze*

Me : Are you sleepy, Jungkook?

Jungkook : A little.

I think it's more than a little.

My partner for patrol tonight was Jungkook.

I couldn't help feel scared, looking out over the field.

But Jungkook just drowsily blinked his eyes.

He's probably too brave to be scared.

Unlike me...

I lightly tapped on Jungkook's shoulder.

Me : You're not sleeping, are you?

Jungkook : *shakes head*...No. I'm not.

Hearing him try to deny it in such a sleepy voice made me laugh.

Me : Let's finish up quickly and get back inside.

Jungkook : Okay.

I was told the field was patrolled less than the other areas.

Probably because it was further away from the classrooms. Plus, it was quite a large area.

So that's why we were only required to walk around and take a quick look, to see if there were any unusual signs.

Maybe this is more like taking a stroll.

But I'm still afraid a zombie might pop out of nowhere.

Me : Hey, Jungkook.

Jungkook : Yeah?

Me : Aren't you afraid of the zombies?

Jungkook : Of course I am.

Me : Oh, I thought you weren't. You know, you don't look like you're scared a bit.

Jungkook : One of us has to...otherwise everyone would be scared all the time.

Hearing his serious voice made me stop.

He seemed so mature and reliable as he walked.

I caught myself staring a bit too deeply as he turned around to look at me.

But there was something I was curious about.

Me : Hey. Can I ask about before you came here? I mean...

Jungkook : I just ran away from the zombies every day.

Me : No, I mean before the zombies. Before this whole thing started.

Jungkook : Ahh.

Jungkook nodded and thought for a few seconds.

Was I being too nosy? Why did the brief silence bother me so much?

Just then, a screeching noise is heard from a distance.

Me : *gasp*

It was so faint that we wouldn't have heard it if it wasn't completely silent. It seemed to come from outside the school grounds.

I couldn't see where it came from, but the sound was so creepy I had to cover my mouth not to scream.

Jungkook : Hey, do not scream.

We paused for a moment to take a look around.

I looked up at Jungkook.

He stood with his back right in front of me to protect me. Not being able to see past his wide shoulders somehow felt comfortable.
