The soft glow of the dying bonfire illuminated Taehyung and Jungkook's faces as they sat at a comfortable distance from each other, their earlier animosity slowly dissipating into the night. They had spent the day participating in team-building exercises at the retreat, attempting to bridge the gap between them that had widened over time.
"Hey," Taehyung finally broke the silence, his voice hesitant but sincere. "I think we should talk about what happened."
Jungkook glanced toward him, his eyes reflecting the fire's warmth. "Yeah. We should."
Taking a deep breath, Taehyung mustered the courage to be vulnerable. "I never meant for things to get so out of hand. I just... I felt like I was losing myself in all the success, you know?"
Jungkook nodded, understanding the pressure that accompanied their fame. "I do. I've been feeling it too." He paused before adding, "But I think we let it get between us. Instead of being there for each other, we ended up competing."
"Right." Taehyung looked down at his hands, fingers playing with the hem of his shirt. "We used to be so close, and then it was like we were strangers. I missed you, Jungkook."
"Me too, Tae. I really did." Jungkook's voice wavered, revealing the depth of his emotions. "And it hurt even more because I knew I was partly to blame."
"Same here," Taehyung agreed, feeling a weight lift from his chest. "Our friendship means the world to me. I don't want to lose that."
"Neither do I." Jungkook stared intently at Taehyung, his eyes filled with determination. "So how do we fix this? How do we make sure it doesn't happen again?"
"Communication, I guess?" Taehyung suggested. "We should be honest with each other and talk about our feelings instead of letting them fester."
"Sounds good," Jungkook nodded. "And maybe we can make a promise to always have each other's backs, no matter what."
"Deal." Taehyung extended his hand, and Jungkook grasped it firmly, sealing their pact.
As they sat there, hands clasped together under the starlit sky, Taehyung and Jungkook began to rebuild the foundation of their friendship. They knew it would take time and effort, but in that moment, surrounded by the warm glow of the fire, they were both willing to try.
