Different people get stressed out over different things. For my boss, Paul, it's choosing where to dispatch my work partner, Declan and I where to go for our next mission that rattles his bones. Declan and I watch with amusement as he paces back and forth in front of a map of the globe printed onto the wall.
Paul finally stops pacing and looks at me and Declan. "How about Iraq?" Relief is evident on his face from finally coming to a decision.
"Ooh, I don't know," Declan stretches his arms above his head and looks at me, "What d'ya say Micky, been awhile since we've been there."
I mischievously grin at the two of them, "well I do love to play with fire."
~~~~~~~~~~~
My name is Mckayla. I am nineteen and have been living here at the homestead ever since Paul found me when I was seven. Some people call me a freak, monster even a superhero. I guess I'm kind of like one of those Marvel X-Men. I can control fire. I can have a fireball in my hand in a fraction of a second.
Declan on the other hand is the fastest person that's ever existed. He can run at speeds that make him look like he just teleported. Unfortunately, he, just like the rest of us, isn't allowed to show-off his talents. Makes him a security threat, or something.
I haven't really thought much about it before, but if he's a 'security threat' then I'd hate to see what politicians thought of me. The only reason that they have no idea about us is because Maxie has gift which allows her to dissolve herself and other objects into being invisible. Our base's cloaking device, if you will.
What's my job? Well, out of the dozens of people living here, me, Declan and our trusty pilot Amber, are the only ones that are outside the field on a regular basis. The field is a giant force field, (made by one of the citizens living here), that protects us from any not so friendly life forms. Declan and I stop the fights. We go out and help the good guys so to speak of.
Yeah, it's confusing I know but it's an alright job and life. I've never been to school or spent more than two days with humans. I've been shot so many times I've lost count but I guess we're all like family in the homestead and that's worth more than anything I could ask for.
I zip up my duffel bag, ready for our trip to Iraq so we can check that everything's in order. I go to my bathroom and put my hair up in a pony tail. I have fiery red hair and a dusting of pale brown freckles on my face. My emerald green eyes turn into a flamey orange colour just before I set fire to something. Another weird thing about me, I know, but it's kind of cool because when their orange, they can glow in the dark. I have olive skin and often smell like smoke. Surprise surprise.
I put on a pair of dark blue skinny jeans and a white T-shirt. I swing my bag over my shoulder and head out to the runway. We have two nicely furnished jets.
I hop on the smaller of the two and walk straight to the lounge where Declan and Amber, the pilot are waiting.
"Micky, nice of you to join the party." Declan jokingly gives me a nod of approval.
I fake salute him and walk up to my bestie, Amber, who gives me a grin once I'm next to her, "hey there, girl. I'm just gonna re-check everything's in order, then we'll be good to go so strap in, would you?"
I smile back at her, "aye, aye, Captain. Whatever you say goes." I turn from her now, and go strap myself into one of the sofas lining the walls of the plane's interior.
Declan joins me soon after and switches the TV on to some reality show. I don't pay much attention to it but I do give him the kind of look that says, "seriously?"
I spend the first few minutes of the first few minutes of the flight going over Paul's notes about mission. It's nothing special, we're basically just checking over some hot spots to make sure everything's still in order.
Eventually boredom begins to take over and the thought of catching a few winks of sleep enters my mind, "hey Amber, how long?!" I shout down to where she is in the cockpit.
"Eight hours!" She shouts back to me. Our jet can go faster than most.
"Mind quietening it down?!" Declan yells at the top of his lungs. "Honestly the things someone has to put up with while trying to watch some TV." He mumbles the last part to himself.
"Wake me up when we get there." I say to him as I get comfier on the sofa.
