Su Mei had just arrived home and was pondering on how to face her parents after so many years Although to them it will be just this morning they last saw.
Mother and Father, in this lifetime of mine, I'll definitely protect you. I'll be a good daughter to you both.
She had just stepped inside when she heard her grandmothers shrewish voice scolding her mother and her.
"How did you train that money loosing daughter of yours. Just a small thing and she not only Locked herself in the room but also went out since morning without informing anyone"
"Who does she expect to do all her chores. Lord knows whom she went to meet"
"Mother you can't say that, my Mei'er is a good child, she probably was just shocked from the news" Her mother defended.
Su Mei was so happy to see her mother once more. She felt like running into her mother's embrace and crying her heart out. But her happiness was cut short listening to her grandmother's words.
" You now have the mind to talk back at me. Are you any better, all you know how to do is to eat and buy medicine, can't even give birth to a proper boy for the Su family, only giving birth to these money loosing children" Her grandmother scolded her mum as she used her cane to hit her.
" Grandmother!" Su Mei shouted, making her presence known as she went to support her mother.
" You money loosing bastard, you finally decided to show your face heh" was what she heard before she also received her share of beating, leaving her back stinging as she protected her mother.
"Mother, you can hit me instead, leave Mei'er alone. She was just shocked earlier" her mother replied as she attempted to push an unmoving Su Mei aside.
Even though her back was stinging, Su Mei couldn't help but smile as she hugged her mother tightly.
" What do you know, ehn because of her tantrum we lost a good potential husband for her" with one hand akimbo to support herself.
" Why do I have to get married to him. If anything youngest aunt should get married first after all she's older than me" Su Mei shouted back as she ran with her mother to escape her grandmother's beating.
" Yes mother Mei'er is still young, why don't we settle Ting'er marriage first" mother reasoned with her mother in law.
"Nonsense, your want my daughter to marry into that family" Grandma Su berated, her bias clearly showing.
" Why can't she, she's already at that age yet still staying with her parents. Why should I marry before her then, grandmother you're too biased" Su Mei chided as her mother was also feeling sad about her mother in law's obvious bias.
This left grandma Su temporarily speechless.
" I don't need you to tell me who to marry and who not to, if I say she must marry him then she will" was her Grandmother's unreasonable argument.
As soon as grandma Su said that, she rushed forward to hit them once more.
Su Mei who had been anticipating this moved her and her mother out of the way, making her grandmother lose her bearing causing her to fall.
Seeing that the two were safe but instead she fell, she started lamenting.
" Aigo!! See how this pair of mother-daughter are treating this old woman. It's our Su families misfortune for marrying a woman like you, giving birth to such children, aiyoo!!"
Pointing at her mother, Grandma Su continued while rubbing her back as eldest sister in-law rushed to help her up and she unfortunately received a hit, as Grandma Su slapped her hand away.
Eldest sister in-law still helped the old woman up, knowing she'd fuss more if no one helped her.
This woman currently making a fuss was her Grandmother.
Grandma Su had married her Grandfather as his second wife and her father just happened to be the child of the first wife, hence her dislike for Su Mei's family
It wasn't that her mother didn't give birth to a male child but that her younger brother was sickly and money was always spent on his medications earning her grandmother's - a well known miser- dislike.
Grandma Su married into the Su family after the first wife died from an unknown illness.
After the death his first wife, Grandpa Su was left to raise the child on his own. That's when he met Grandma Su who was also a widow and fell in love with her. He even disregarded the fact that she was a widow who had a son with her. At least that was what everyone said.
Su Mei had always felt that there was somethings that were hidden. She didn't believe it cause her grandfather wasn't known to act on emotion. He was a rational man.
Also with the fact that her grandmother was a well known shrew in the village
The eldest son came with Grandma Su from her first marriage. While the Second son was from the first wife, the third son and daughter were the child of Grandpa and Grandma Su after their marriage, and they were showered with love from both parents.
Since the second son was from the first wife, it explained Grandma Su dislike for him and his family. To outsiders she behaved like the perfect stepmother who loved her stepson even more than her own child.
" What's going on here, why the ruckus" came Grandpa Su's aged voice from outside. Following him were her father and eldest uncle. Her third uncle lived in the county, he was studying to become a scholar.
Hearing her husband's voice, her grandmother immediately stopped her scolding as she sat back on the floor ready to start a new drama.
When they entered the yard, the scene they saw was of a lamenting Grandma Su on the floor, Su Mei and her mother hugging themselves at one side, an anxious eldest sister in-law with the youngest daughter of the Su family just stepping out of the house.
The only reason she stepped out was because of her Father's appearance.
" Isn't it the second child's daughter, she left the house since morning and was just coming back, worrying everyone"
In front of Grandpa Su, Grandma Su always somewhat behaved herself. Pulling the step mother card.
" I was just asking her where she went since, when she got angry, scolding me and causing me to fall...wohoo!" She cried out as she kept hitting her laps, to show how agrieved she felt.
"Look I even injured myself, see" she slightly raised her skirt to show her ankle, which was indeed bruised albeit lightly.
Seeing the injury Grandpa Su frowned.
By this time, Su Mei's father already rushed to their side, supporting his wife.
" See he doesn't even care about this step mother of his only caring for his wife"
That was her Grandmother, always bringing up the fact that she was a second wife to gain sympathy, with the fake tears.
Su Mei rolled her eyes at her grandmother's theatrics but two can play the game.
" Wohoo!! Grandfather, father, you have to save me" Su Mei cried out as she held on tightly to her father.
Her outburst shocked everyone, drawing their attention away from her grandmother.
" Wahhh! Father if you had not arrived your only daughter would have become a married woman"
This definitely drew her father's attention and she knew he wouldn't be happy.
As she continued her act, Su Mei wasn't aware of another pair of eyes that was trained on her.
