Once upon a time, there lived a girl named Violet Wilde.
Violet was dyslexic and ADHD, meaning she couldn’t read as well as anyone else and could not sit still to save her life or anyone else’s. Because of this, she was quiet. She didn’t talk much. She only ever had one friend that didn’t think she was a freak. She lived, alone, with her single father. Her mother had left them only months after Violet was born- for a reason Joshua, Violet’s father, hid from Violet for the first 14 years of her life. Joshua had remarried once- to a woman named Charlotte Meyers.
At first, she was nice. Once she and Joshua were married and she found out the truth about Violet’s mother and why she had to leave, Charlotte began to abuse Violet- in secret of course. She cut her skin, called her terrible names, even cut the word ‘Demon’ into Violet’s skin. Charlotte told Violet if she ever told her father, she’d kill her. It continued for five years, from the time she was five up until Violet was ten.
Once Violet’s father did find out, he threw Charlotte out. He paid a therapist to talk to Violet every Tuesday, but nothing would help. Violet only thought of the things Charlotte had said about her birth mother and couldn’t help but wonder why she had left in the first place. For four years, Violet tried hard to hide her scars, not think too much about her mother, or worry too much about her father, who still cried occasionally over her mother. Violet tried not to feel like a freak more than ever.
But, the thing was, Violet wasn’t a freak. Violet wasn’t normal, either. Violet wasn’t even entirely human. It was these things in her past and the things about her that made her special. How, you ask?
Violet Wilde was a demigod.
Well, technically, I guess she still is. How do I know? Well, if you haven’t guess by now, I’M Violet. This is my story. (Duh.)
You know, I used to think I was normal. I mean, doesn't everyone? I mean, honestly, no matter how crazy you are, you know somewhere deep inside you that you're not really all that messed up. Try me.
My mother is Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. Monsters constantly hunt me, try to kill me. I suffer heartbreaks, betrayals worse than you'll ever understand. Sure, the weapons are cool, but honestly, would you rather fight a monster for your life or your best friend for a boy? Actually, don't answer that.
I've gone through more crap than you know. From having my mother leave before I ever got to know her to being abused by a woman I trusted to finding out my best friend is a fish to being betrayed by the one I love, being a demigod is NOT easy.
But hey, if you still want to read about my crap life, go ahead; I'm not going to stop you. But just listen to me, mortal- if it turns out that you're....not-so-mortal, SHUT THE BOOK. I you recognize yourself at all...get some help. This is not a fun world to live in and I wouldn’t wish this life upon anyone.
And… just one thing I've learned from my experiences as a demigod child, aside from the obvious- 'don't challenge Athena in ANYTHING', 'don’t insult Apollo's poetry’, ‘don’t try to out-prank the Hermes kids'- one lesson had been startlingly clear to me.
Beauty is pain, my darlings. Take it from someone who should know this by now.
Not like you don't know what Violet looks like, but still; there's a picture of her on the side.
I hope you enjoyed the prologue for Beauty is Pain! First chapter should be coming very soon!
