Prologue

"Happy birthday, Lexa!" Mother says as she picks me up to hug me. As usual, she drops the 'A' at the beginning of my name. Mother and Father have a tendency to to that. I'm not sure why they do, but I have gotten used to being called Lexa. That's even how Mother and Father spell it.

Father returns from the car holding a cake with blue and pink icing. He sets it down on the blanket Mother has lain out in the grass. I look at the cake, confused.

"Daddy, where's the candles?" I look up at him, and he's smiling.

"I have them in my bag, Lexa. Don't worry, you'll get to blow them out after we eat lunch," Father answers, smiling his kind smile.

Mother opens the food basket and pulls out three peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I clap with delight. For a little girl turning 4, PB & J is the best thing you could hope for, other than the cake, that is.

Soon, the sandwiches have been devoured, and Father opens up his bag. He pulls out four colorful candles, and Mother and Father place the candles on the four corners of the cake. I look at the cake and become upset. They wrote 'Alexa' on it. I reach out and wipe the 'A' off with my pointer finger. I look up at Mother and Father.

"It's Lexa!" I say. Mother and Father laugh.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart, my bad," Father says and he kisses my forehead. I lick the frosting off my finger in a satisfied way.

Father pulls out a matchbox and lights all four candles. After Mother and Father sing a round of "Happy Birthday" I blow out the candles.

"Did you make a wish, Lexa?" Mother asks me.

"Yes," I say with a smile on my face. "I made a big, big wish!"

"What did you wish for?" Father asks.

"Can't tell," I say, smiling wider. "It's a secret." I hum quietly to myself. I know what I wished for and I wanted it to come true.

Mother took out a knife and cut three pieces of cake. She and Father eat with forks; I prefer to use my hands. We finish the cake, and I'm a mess. There is frosting and cake crumbs all over my hands and face. Mother laughs and takes a picture with her camera.

Father picks up a napkin to wipe my face. "Daddy," I say, laughing.

Mother and Father begin to pack up our picnic, and I become worried.

"Mommy, Daddy, where's my present?"

"It's at home, Lexa. Daddy and I didn't forget."

I start dancing. "Present, present!" I sing happily. Mother, Father, and I get in the car. Mother buckles me in, Father starts the engine, and we begin the car ride home.

The rest is a blur. A car horn, tires screeching, Father yells, Mother screams. A chunk of glass come hurtling straight toward me. Instinctively, I cover my face with my arms.

At the hospital, the doctors wonder how i managed to come out of the crash without a single cut or bruise. Another doctor walks in, his expression sad. I didn't understand what he meant when he said Mother and Father were gone.

"Where did they go?" I look up at him, innocently.

The doctor sighs, sits down on the hospital bed, rests a hand on my shoulder, and looks at me sadly, completely unsure of how to tell a 4 year old that her parents died.

I should've died, too. There was only one thing that kept me alive; my wish had come true...

So... what do you guys think of the prologue? I wrote it last year (before I had a Wattpad account) and I lost it. Just found it so I posted it. Hope you all like it. Tell me what you think in the comments!!!
