◇─◇──◇─────◇──◇─◇Tolkien rummaged through his bag as he searched for his notebook, which was no where to be found. He was sure he had packed it, but maybe he did forget after all. Tolkien cursed himself as he zipped his backpack back up. His thoughts were interrupted once he heard a beautiful voice. It was a man's voice, it filled his thoughts with a sweet melody.
Tolkien looked to his left towards the lake. There he saw a man sitting on a rock. The most bizarre and noticeable feature about him was the long, red fish tail that replaced his legs. His fingers were webbed and he had red fins on the back of his forearm. His eyes were a bright red color that even Tolkien could see from where he stood. The white parts of his eyes were replaced with black. His hair was a silky brown, and his skin was fare.
Tolkien was immediately amazed by his beauty, and took a step closer towards the lake. He wanted a closer look at the beautiful creature before him. The man on the rock turned his head to Tolkien as he greeted him with a smile. He jumped from the rock and into the water as he made his way towards Tolkien. His beautiful melody blessed Tolkien's ears as he took one step into the water.
The man swam closer to the shore but eventually stopped before he got to close. He gestured for Tolkien to come closer as he continued to sing. Tolkien stared in awe at the angelic creature and took another step into the water towards him. The creature extended its hand out for Tolkien, an evil grin spread on his face as Tolkien slowly reached his hand out. And just when there hands almost touched, Tolkien burst out laughing. The half fish-half man stared at him confused.
"Come on. You should know me by now Clyde. Your song doesn't work on me." Tolkien laughed some more before leaving the water. Clyde groaned, "why bother to tease me?" He asked with annoyance as he crossed his arms. "Because the face you make is just too adorable to miss!" Tolkien exclaimed as he grabbed his bag from the ground.
Tolkien was a scientist. Him and his crew had discovered the sirens over a year ago and have been studying them since. In the beginning, there was a lot of lives that were lost to the sirens. That was until they discovered Tolkiens immunity against their songs. They weren't sure why he was immune but either way it was now his responsibility to research the sirens since he was the only one who could.
Over time, Tolkien had grown fond of a certain siren. His name was Clyde. They spent a lot of time talking to each other and over time Tolkien had developed some kind of feelings for the siren. Of course he would never admit it out loud, his coworkers would freak out.
"For a second there, I actually thought you were going to walk into the water." Clyde said. "And I thought you were going to come on land. This is the closest you've ever been!" Tolkien exclaimed as he clapped for the siren, signifying that he did a "good job". Clyde glared at him before turning back into the water.
If a siren were to go on land then that means they could become human, but would have to give up their immortality in return. If a human were to go in the water then that meant death by the hands of a siren. This led to many discussions about "leaving the water" or "coming in the water" between Clyde and Tolkien. Neither gave into the other.
