A Drowning

His grace doesn't end up in a tree. Oh no, it ends up in the water. Huge swaths of kelp in a shallow ocean, giving life and feeding life. But right now he doesn't know that.

He's standing on the edge, small waves lapping up against his ankles. One part of him - too big, too sad, too loud - is telling him to go into the water. There's a certain rightness in that action.

But the more familiar part of him, the one that guided him through countless hunts, it tells him to fuck off. Step away from that edge of water; you are going to drown. It's rather sensible and he should heed it.

He ignores it and goes right into the water, following a thrum of power and energy he can't quite describe, not yet. And he swims farther away from land in frigid waters until he gets to a point. He sinks, submerged, surrounded by kelp and other detritus.

"It's very peaceful down here," he thinks...

... up until his brain kicks in and tells him he needs oxygen, like, right now. He panics, thrashing in the water, schools of fish swimming away from the disturbance. His hand brushes against a branch of kelp and the water just lights up: bright and painful.

He opens his mouth to gasp, letting water and grace pour into him. He knows that he's drowning, but he also knows that he can't.

(And an angel leaves the water.)

Author's Note: Part of a larger story that was never written since I lost interest in the show. It was an alternate universe where Gabriel was an amnesiac fallen angel like Anna, but who had also taken up being a hunter.
