"Now the tony award for actor in a musical goes to James Peters for" James's daydream announced before being interrupted by his science teacher.
"James you'd do so much better in this class if you actually cared," Mr Patinkin his poor science teacher said to him. Cause sure James's was smart but science just didn't interest him like theatre did. The way the warmth of the stage light felt on his skin beat dissecting animals any day. But James picked all stem subjects as his parents insisted that theatre was just a hobby. So he hadn't performed in around 3 years, well on a stage at home he was belting Sondheim better than anyone. But today he was going to try and care about science. He actually started taking the notes down but someone caught his eye. It was Parker Fields, the blond-haired boy who James had shared classes with for around 4 years. He was wearing a Godspell t shirt, he was a theatre kid and judging by his watch band also gay.
"I like your shirt," James said to Parker at the end of class."You know what is?" Parker asks seeming sceptical.
"It's a shirt for Godspell, the legendary Stephen Schwartz rock opera,"
"Wow I took you for a stem nerd? I've got Theatre club now you should come," Parker said. So James followed him to the small room that up until today James had thought was a cupboard. In that room was 4 chairs and a Bluetooth speaker on a small table.
"So this is James. Wanna have a shot at singing?" Parker said.
"Yeh sure, um do I just connect to the speaker," James asked.
"Yeh It's called the holy worship of Audra McDonald" A tall dark haired girl with braids answered.
"Ok thanks" James responded, he had found his people and he started playing "Not While I'm Around" from Sweeney Todd. As the music started the small group started to cheer. Then James started to sing and although he hadn't sung in a while he still managed to bring the group to tears. He took a bow and sat down in the chair they'd managed to find.
"Is someone cutting onions, that was beautiful James," Parker said and everyone else seemed to agree.
So, he spent his lunch break there a couple of other people sang songs the girl with braids that'd introduced the speaker: Yasmin sang a powerful rendition of Le Jazz Hot, another girl Kim sang a soul crushing rendition of send in the clowns. And then Parker's song started, it was a doozy, it was On My Own from Les Misérables. For a song made for a female voice Parker gave it a new depth and vulnerability
"Would you go out with me" Parker said later that day to James.
"Of course, you are amazing. Would you date me?" James asked vulnerably
"Yes James, I would," Parker responded. James started to cry.
"Are you ok" Parker asked putting his arms around James.
"It's just weird, we sang about the other in our songs. I was on my own and you were my someone to watch over me" James said.
"So we did," Parker responded.
It had seemed James's problems were solved all because James Happened.
