“Mama”

“Mama”

“Mama”

My very own custom alarm clock that I personally made, woke me up. As usual.

I opened my eyes to look at my baby in her bed next to me. She was smiling at me with her baby teeth in full view. The best way to wake up.

“Hey baby, good morning”, I said as I transferred her to my bed for some cuddle time.

This was our routine, when I didn't have to work the morning shift. Wake up together. Cuddle for sometime. Brush, bath, brekkie brekkie. Then I’ll play with her till my shift before dropping her off at her grandparents’ house. If they were busy I’d get someone else to babysit her. Someone else being my 14 year old neighbour. Alexis adores Lucy and she gets paid. So it’s a win win.

Sunday mornings are for cuddles and chocolate chip pancakes. Our favourite.

So after we brush our teeth in hers and hers sink. I bathed her and dressed her in a very pretty summer dress, tied her hair into two pigtails complete with bows. I love this look on her.

Taking care of her in a way that I was never taken care of is how I healed my inner child. It also made me realize that I’ll never be able to forgive my mother. I used to think it was normal, how she treated me. But now that I am a mom, I’d rather die than treat my daughter the way that my mother treated me. Nothing justifies that behaviour. The only person who’s shown me motherly love is my ex boyfriend’s mom. Elizabeth. I wouldn’t have survived the past few years without her. I learned from her how to be a good mom. She’s my family. I can’t wait to be part of hers.

“You are the cutest baby in the whole world, Luce”, I said grinning at my baby.

She smiled right back, “No you mama”.

I laugh and kiss her head while thanking the heavens for giving me her. She has truly been the best thing that ever happened to me, besides her dad.

“Let’s go get some food in your belly, hmm?” I pick her up and place her on hip as she claps and giggles.

I die and go to heaven every time she smiles. Why are babies so cute? Maybe I am  biased because she’s mine.

Lucy was demolishing her pancakes when our doorbell rang. Lucy looked at me all confused, I don’t blame her cause that doesn’t usually happen here. Our visitors always call us when they are here. Besides, no one even comes here on Sundays. I turned the stove off before I went to check who it was.

I opened the door and was immediately forced by someone into a very warm hug. The signature curly hair gave away the identity of the attacker, so I hugged my best friend back. Her hugs are the best. It’s so warm and strong and feels like home.

“What’s up sam?”, I asked her gently, feeling that something was  wrong.

“Hey are you okay?! ” Samantha asked almost frantically.

“Are YOU okay?”, I asked incredulously.

“What’s going on? Why are you so freaked?”

“Why are you so calm?”, she pulled back and looked at me strangely.

“Why wouldn’t I be calm? Is something wrong? Did something happen?”. Okay I am officially starting to freak out now.

Then I see it. The moment of realization in her face. Something IS wrong.
