Chapter 6

That was his pick-up line?

The rest of the day passed as per normal, with Aila receiving more than her fair share of glares from the popular’s.

Mark had repetitively told her to keep her earphones in, and be preoccupied by her work, or her phone. Aila didn’t see how it was so bad to have his brother in her class, but she agreed all the same.

She kept her sketchbook hugged to her chest and her iPod plugged in as she entered the classroom, and sat down the back. Guys who were obviously part of the S.O.F eyed her, smirking as she walked past. But Charlie was nowhere to be seen.

The teacher came into the classroom soon after. She was a middle-aged woman, with an old face but a child-like spark in her eyes. “I’ll skip the details and introductions, and get straight to the point. Your assignment for the semester is to create a page, or a poster, or whatever, of things that describe who you are. Get to it!”

The teacher was immediately bombarded with questions, but none of which came from Aila. She flipped open her sketchbook to a new page, and began to draw, stuffing her iPod into her ears in the process. She leant back in her chair, putting her feet on the table, and resting the book on her thighs.

The door swung open five minutes later, hitting the wall with a loud ‘whack’. Aila looked up from her work, to see Charlie standing in the doorway, hands in pockets with a sketchbook tucked underneath his arm, smirking.

“Sorry I’m late,” he drawled, as he strode past the teacher, heading straight to the table beside Aila.

This table had been cleared only seconds before by someone of the S.O.F, meaning that they were merely reserving this spot for Charlie.

Charlie walked up to Aila’s desk, not tearing his eyes away from her. Aila looked up and met his eyes briefly, before giving him a small smile and turning her attention back to her work.

Charlie sat down beside her, and tapped her on the shoulder. Aila took one of her earphones out, and looked at him questioningly.

“Do you know what we’re meant to be doing?” He asked.

Aila looked at the teacher, then back at him. “Apparently we’re spending the semester pouring our hearts out onto paper. We have to make a page that describes us.”

Charlie leant forward, “am I on your page?”

Aila bit back a laugh, was that supposed to be a pick up line!?

“Maybe,” Aila said, “but I think it’d be inappropriate to draw an arsehole on my assignment.”

The S.O.F’s who’d been listening all let out an ‘ooh’, as Aila put her earphones back in her ears, and turned her attention back to the paper in front of her.

Charlie tapped her on the shoulder again. “You had me surprised this morning,” he confessed, “I’ve never met a chick who listens to brokeNCYDE.”

“You probably never will again,” Aila grinned, “I’ve only met one other, and she lives in a different country.”

Charlie nodded, “that’s right, you’re from Australia aren’t you?”

“Yep,” Aila replied, popping the P.

Charlie chuckled; Aila took this as her cue to get back to work.

Unfortunately, it was the cue for her phone to go off instead.

And it wasn’t on silent.

Half the class turned around at the noise, staring at Aila.

“What?” She asked loudly. The class turned back to what they were doing.

“Good one Aila, fucking forget to put your phone on silent. Fuck.” She grumbled, trying desperately to pull her phone out of her back pocket. This was incredibly hard in skinny jeans.

‘Is he hitting on you? Is he even there? What’s going on!?’

Aila giggled, Smiley was like a protective big brother. Charlie leant over, trying to read the message. Aila quickly went to reply.

‘Attempted to once, yes, and I’m doing my work ;D. I know, I was shocked too.’

She put her phone back in her pocket, after putting it on silent.

“So, how’re you finding America so far?” Charlie asked. Aila shrugged, “I dunno, I really haven’t been anywhere. It’s heaps different to Australia, I’m kinda scared I’ll fuck up big in public.”

“What do you mean? It can’t be too different, I wouldn’t know; I’ve never been out of the country.”

“Well I crossed the road the other day to try and buy some food yeah? I gotta eat believe it or not. Next thing I know I’m being escorted home by police, I still don’t know what I did wrong!”

Charlie laughed, a little too loud. “You’ve got a lot to learn then.”

“Heck yes.”

Charlie shifted his chair closer, resting his arm on Aila’s desk. “I could be your teacher. I’ll show you around,” he smirked, and ran his fingertips over Aila’s cheek.

Aila raised an eyebrow, “You have no idea what you’d be getting yourself into.”

Charlie tilted her chin upwards, and brought his face so close that their foreheads and noses were touching. “I think I do, and I like it.”

Aila gazed into his blue-green eyes for a moment, before smirking and looking down at her work again. Charlie stayed in the same position, his head touching Aila’s while watching her work.

“Mmm,” he murmured, “I don’t think you’re as innocent as you look.”

Aila grinned, “Nope. Your brother doesn’t call me Trouble for nothing.”

The bell rang at that moment. Aila packed away her things, while Charlie sat in shock. “You know my brother!?”

“Yep,”

“And he didn’t tell me!?”

“Nope.” Aila saluted him, before leaving.

Smiley was waiting right outside the door.

“What happened?” He asked.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what!? What did he do!?”

“Nothing, yet. I let slip that I know you, I think he’s going to give you shit about it. Sorry.”

Mark sighed, putting his arm around Aila and leading her towards the lockers. “Fuck don’t do that, I thought you kissed him for a second.”

Aila laughed, “Nope! But if he really is interested, then he’ll be questioning you when youse get home.”

“That reminds me, do you mind if I come over to yours tonight? I got nothing better to do, and I can help you out with biology.”

Aila grinned, “yay!”

Smiley laughed, “I’ll text you later, bye Trouble!”

“BYE SMILEY!”

Aila put her books back in her locker, and got out her bag. She noticed Charlie eye her off as she walked out the doors, and out to the gates.

Aila smirked.

This was one girl he wasn’t going to bed.

This gets better, I swear.
