~ Doctors live in a world of constant progress and forward motion. Stand still for a second, and you'll be left behind. But as hard as we try to move forward... as tempting as it is to never look back... the past always comes back to bite us in the ass. And as history shows us again and again, those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. ~
~PATIENT ROOM~
"So, you're a evolutionary biologist?" Derek asks Dr. Singer, the man Izzie brought in for him and Robin to see.
"Mm. I was. I was part of a research team..." He replies. Robin hums to signal she is listening as well, while she checks his eyes. "On my way to the Galapagos Islands, and suddenly, my father died. And, uh, of course I had to go home." Derek hums this time, "Next thing I know, I'm back in Chehalis, marrying my high school sweetheart and teaching biology to kids who would rather be anywhere else." Robin chuckles as she continues to check on him, "I hear you're an excellent teacher. Isobel is an excellent student." Dr. Singer says as he looks to Izzy. "She's gonna be a doctor herself someday. If she doesn't get to distracted."
Robin hums in agreement before saying, "Well, everything looks good, Dr. Singer. What we're gonna do it, uh, take some blood and run some tests. Okay? " Derek places Dr. Singers glasses back on his face for him.
"Okay."
"Alright. Stevens." Robin says gestors to her in one word to follow as she leaves the room. "How long has he been like this?"
"Um, I talked to him at Christmas, and he was fine. He was still teaching." Robin writes down what she is saying on the chart as she continues, "The school only let him go six months ago."
"Is he on any medication?"
"He's on every medication, Alzheimer's meds, Parkinson's meds, antidepressants."
"What was his diagnosis?"
"Dementia. The guy was useless. He might as well have just said old age." Izzie shakes her head in disbelief.
"It's possible." Robin tries to reason with her.
"He's 67. And if he fell and hit his head, he could have an intracranial bleed, and no one would know about it. His wife is dead. He has no kids, so-"
Izzie gets cut off by Christina and Meredith walking up, "Where the hell have you been?! You missed your IL2 appointment." Christina states.
"You told Christina I was here? Mer, who else did you tell?"
"Well, well, well. Look who's back." Charles laughs as he walks over as well.
"This guy?" Izzie asks Meredith. "You told the guy that got me fired?"
"I didn't tell him. I don't even know him. It's my first day back." Mer defends herself.
"Dr, Percy's on my service today." Robin states. Izzie just sighs at that.
"And I didn't get you fired. You did that all by yourself." Charles states in a matter of fact tone.
"Dr. Percy, Dr. Singer needs a full dementia work-up. Dr. Stevens will give you the details." Robin says walking away.
~ ER ROOM ~
"You have a condition called NPH. Norman pressure hydrocephalus" Izzie tells Dr. Singer as her, Charles, Robin and Derek all gather around him.
"It's a build up of cerebrospinal fluid in your brain. Very hard to, uh, diagnose, but thanks to Dr. Percy here-" Robin gets cut off by Charles.
"The spinal tap removed some of the fluid, relieving the pressure in your brain, resolving your symptoms, which is how we came to your diagnosis."
"Hm. Dr. Avery and Dr. Shepherd wants to put in a permanent shunt." Izzie tells the man on the bed. "It'll drain the excess fluid to your abdomen, so-"
"Oh, that-that sounds like a major surgery." Dr. Singer says worriedly.
"No. It's 45 minutes. It's a very common procedure. Me and Dr. Avery do it all the time." Derek says reassuring him.
"Well, I don't think I could afford it." Dr. Singer looks down, "My savings, my retirement, uh, it all went to my late wife's medical care. So, uh... What do I do?"
~ NURSES STATION ~
"Dr. Avery." Izzie calls following her and Derek.
"Stevens." She reply's back.
"I hate to even ask this of you after everything you've done for me, but is there any way Dr. Singer's surgery could be pro bono?" Izzie asks as Robin turns to face her.
Robin looks at Izzie for a second, "Look, if you get the chief to sign off on this, I'd be happy to donate my time." She answers the blonde girl as she knows Webber might not do it as she walks away.
~ ROBINS HOUSE ~
Robin walks in the door and see's Lexie immediately, cooking dinner for them both and watching a show. "Hey!" Lexie excitedly greets as she notices her girlfriend.
"Hi." Robin says coming behind Lexie and hugging her, kissing her neck.
"Well if you're gonna do that let me turn off the stove." Lexie turns off the stove and turns towards Robin and starts kissing her as Robin sets her on the counter.
~ Sometimes the past is something you just can't let go of. And sometimes the past is something we'll do anything to forget. And sometimes we learn something new about the past... that changes everything we know... about the present."
