Our first sexual encounter played on my mind as I washed myself in the lake beside the waterfall.
It had been a few days since then and I got my period the morning after. I remember, the sun barely rose and I had to run out of the cabin, experiencing excruciating pain that made my legs quiver like Bambi on ice.
A few moments later the blood appeared as expected. The cloth that I had stuffed into my pocket was designed for this but I wanted to use my tampons, for comfortability and also I didn't want Tobias to know that I was on because then he would tell me to take medication and I only wanted to use that for emergencies.
"Tee!"
My eyes snapped open and in front of me was Tobias in all his very very handsome glory. His once clean-shaven face turned into a stubble the few days we were here and now it was an unruly beard. And his black hair was so long that he was starting to borrow my hair bands.
"Yeah, what's up?"
He paused as if distracted, then shook his head and said, "Oh nothing. I was just looking for you."
He sat at the edge and dipped his legs into the lake.
"Why are you avoiding me, Tee?"
"You know how I feel about that nickname." I deflected.
He chuckled while picking at a leaf, "I know but I like how it makes you blush. Now back to the question. You can tell me if something is wrong."
"I know," I said and paused, hesitantly.
"Since we are here together, I expect communication to be strong. We can't conquer this together if you decide to start ignoring and avoiding me. You don't have to tell me your life story but a little clue on what's wrong won't hurt."
I nodded biting my lip in thought. I admired him though, he was mature enough to have a conversation with me about the obvious tension.
"The reason I've been a little distant is I started my period a few days ago." I looked at him and it was as if I could see the gears turning as his gaze focused on nowhere in particular.
"Painful period."
"Yeah, I want to be honest. I am not convinced that someone will come as soon as we think, looking from a realistic standpoint and I don't want to be in a situation where you're bitten by something and I have used all the medicine and I can't save you." After I finished he looked at me and smiled.
"Don't worry about me. I'm used to all this, my grandad always took me on outings like this. He's the one that taught me survival skills. I just wish I listened more." He chuckled then his eyes met mine. "You won't have to do any saving, I promise."
Tobias stepped into the lake and came towards me, pulling me into his chest. My hands found themselves on his chest. He bent down to kiss me gently; his hand rubbed my hips.
The kiss broke and we were in each other's embrace.
"That's a big promise to uphold," I muttered.
"I don't like breaking promises, especially to people that matter to me."I stepped back and chuckled. My hand held his check as I gazed into his hazel eyes.
"There are scissors in the first aid kit," I say running my hands through his long hair.
Tobias laughed, "I am offended, don't you like my luscious locks."
"I don't mind it but I know it gets in your way. Plus your hair could never be like mine."
We chuckle and he kisses my neck.
"After we eat you can cut my hair and shave the beard with the straight razor you bought."
He left and went back to the cabin while I lotioned up and made my way back.
"Oh, you already prepared it." Meaning the food, it looked like a luxury platter, full of mangos, berries, watermelon and fish.
Tobias nodded, "Yeah, I tried cutting it the way you do it but at least it tastes the same, right?"
"Of course."
We have unspokenly established what needed to be done. I usually did the washing, cleaning and maintenance of the cabin, while Tobias hunted and searched for food and filled up our water supply every day. I also recently found a good substitute for lotion in one of the tree saps, which I collected and brought to the cabin.
Tobias found a tree that had this really sweet sap, he tasted it and declared it safe after a few days.
We ate in a comfortable silence and after that I bought out one of the stools for Tobias to sit on and the scissors and straight razor.
I gave him the shampoo and conditioner and told him to go and wash his hair, thoroughly. He followed that with a yes ma'am and walked away.
"You've got to look good for when they come and get us. They don't want to be picking up a caveman." I laughed as he took a seat. I played a little with his hair to get an idea of how to cut it. "I need to warn you, I don't have much experience with cutting hair."
"Damn, I knew I went to the wrong barbers," He joked.
"Haha, now stay still."
I went with my instincts and made the back short and the top longer than the back.
It turned out alright. He used his waterlogged phone as a mirror and ran his hand through his hair. "You didn't do too badly. Are you sure you haven't cut hair before?"
"I mean I used to for my dad before he passed away but I guess I still have the muscle memory. Now let's do the beard."
He nodded and rested his head on my stomach as I leaned forward to get a better angle. "I'm sorry if I cut you, I've been out of practice." I used do practice on my dad, I wanted a skill and it was that one that I gained. My dad supported me regardless.
I knew he would be confused, I mean what 19-year-old uses a straight razor but he didn't question me and let me do my thing.
I spread some of the lotions on and gave him a clean shave with no nicks, I was proud of myself. I also rinsed the razor off in a bowl of water before cleaning up his brows as well.
"Thank you." He said, standing in front of me with a new look. "It must be hard to have gone through that. My grandad passed away last year so I have an idea of how you must feel."
"Yeah, my dad was amazing. I have just been angry he's gone so soon but I'm even angrier that my mother moved on so quickly. It was as if he meant nothing to her." I whispered.
He hugged me as tears fell from my eyes. After a while, I was led back inside and was lulled to sleep when he continued hugging me on the bed for several minutes.
When I woke up it was dark and the fire was crackling but it was cold beside me making me shoot out of bed. 'Where was he?' I thought.
I moved the curtain and stood on the ledge, there he was roasting a turkey.
"Tee, you're up." he beckoned me to come towards him. "Look, what I found while walking back. I didn't have much luck catching fish today and thought we woul-'' He paused, looking at me. "Something up?"
"I was worried. You weren't there when I woke up."
He stopped turning the turkey to let it roast a bit more over the fire. "I know. There were a few things that needed to be done and I wanted you to rest."
I nodded, "Fine. I just need to change and I'll join you."
He kissed my forehead and said, "I made a small fire for you outside so that you can change your tampon and laid a clean shirt for you on the bed."
"Thank you."
I changed and we ate then went to bed.
