A basilisk kills you if you make direct eye contact with it
If not you get petrified
Mrs Norris saw it through a puddle
Colin saw it through his camera
And the Hufflepuff saw it through nearly headless nick
Nearly headless nick made eye contact with it but he's a ghost, he can't die again.
