Y/N POV
I've been away at college for 5 months already, and it's been a wreck. Nobody is welcoming, and my roommates all get drunk and come home at 2AM every night. But the worst of all, is that my boyfriend, Steve, isn't here. He decide to stay in Hawkins and work at Scoops, the ice cream shop. His dad wanted him to learn "life skills."
But, today I am going back to my hometown of Hawkins to surprise Steve. Dustin is the only person who knows about it, and it's going to be a surprise for everyone.
I'm currently calling Steve in my dorm room. It's dark, other than the lamp by my bedside table. None of my roomates are here thankfully, as they are all at a Friday night party.
Steve says something, making me laugh. You can feel a smile through the phone, "God I miss you Y/N. I wanna hear your laugh in person."
This makes me smile even wider, butterflies taking flight in my stomach. "I know. I miss you too, Steve. It's killing me being here without you or any of my friends."
Steve's voice softens, "Is anything going on down there? Is something wrong?"
I don't know why, but I don't want to tell him about my roommates, or the difficult classes, or all the other messes in my life. I don't want him thinking about any of that when I surprise him tomorrow. It would ruin the entire day if all I did was complain about college life.
I fake a laugh, "No, everything's fine. I just keep thinking of all the times when we were together."
I hear Steve sigh through the phone. "I know. There's so many things here that remind me of you."
I look around my room, and my eyes fall on a picture of the two of us together. We were so happy. "Yeah, I get it. Even though you've never lived here, I still see you in different places and it hurts like nothing else."
You and Steve at a dance senior year (the picture on your wall).
"Just a few more months, Y/N. Don't worry. It'll make everything better the next time we see each other."
I smile. If only he knew.
The next day..
I'm stepping out of my car with a smile on my face. I have never woken up so early with so much excitement in my entire life. The entire night I was thinking about seeing Steve, and the reaction he would have at seeing me.
My first stop is Dustin's house, and then I'll be heading over to Scoops Ahoy. Unfortunately, Steve had to work today. But, this gives me time to say hi to Dustin and pick him up.
Dustin and I really bonded during the Demogorgon fights. He has taken the role of a little brother for me.
I knock on the door, and it opens within a second. I jump back at the sudden shock. Before I know it, Dustin is in my arms hugging me.
"Holy shit, holy shit, holy shit! I can't believe you're here Y/N." Dustin says, out of breath. He has finally let me go and is now just staring at me.
I smile, "I know! It's been way to long! How's the new kitty?"
Dustin laughs. This has become our own inside joke, since only a few people know what actually happened to Mews. RIP Mews, I think.
"Pretty good. I think my mom has gotten over the fact that I 'lost' our cat." He puts quotations over the lost part of his sentence.
I laugh, and then Dustin's face changes. He seems to have realized something. He beams, "Excuse my foul language, but holy shit once again. You came to see me before your own boyfriend."
"Oh my god, Dustin! How could you ever think I wouldn't see you first? You are obviously way more important than him." I joke, "You guys honestly aren't even on the same level."
Dustin rolls his eyes. "Yeah, yeah. You don't have to tell me." He starts closing the door and yells, "Bye, mom! Y/N's gonna drive me to Scoops. Gotta see her boyfriend!"
Mrs. Henderson comes around the corner. "Oh my goodness, Dusty! You didn't tell me she was coming! Oh goodness, Y/N how are you?" She comes out the door and hugs me.
I hear Dustin mumble, "This might be why I didn't say anything.."
Mrs. Henderson and I have a very lengthy hello, and finally Dustin breaks and yells for us to leave. I won't say that I was thankful, but I definitely was not mad.
As we are walking to my car I say, "Alright Dusty, are you excited?"
Dustin rolls his eyes. "Shut the hell up."
The drive feels like it take forever. Every second feels like a minute, and every minute feels like an hour. Dustin is keeping the car ride entertaining, but my mind always keeps going back to Steve and what he's gonna do when he sees me.
When I pull into my parking spot, my heart is racing a mile a minute. I walk into the mall with excitement shaking my legs, making me walk so fast it may be considered running. Dustin has to struggle to keep up with me.
Finally, I see it in eyesight. Scoops Ahoy. Every teenagers dream place to go after school with their friends. The summer hotspot. And most importantly, the destination I have been waiting months to come to.
I turn the corner, nearly running to the store. Steve is leaning over the back counter, probably talking to Robin. God he looks hot when he's working, I think.
I walk up to the store and ring the bell. "Excuse me? I would like a Mint Chocolate Chip double scoop please."
Steve turns his head the slightest way and says, "One se-." Then, he must realize because his head turns once again. But, this time a full turn. His mouth is wide open with a smile blooming.
"Surprise!" I yell.
