Yellowjackets State Game, 1996The crowd was roaring in anticipation, her teammates were cheering her on, the sun painfully shining in her eyes and the two girls guarding her on the opposing team is all she could focus on.
The match was tied 3 to 3 and Bianca had the ball.
With one girl on her right and the other on her left, Bianca was cornered.
It was the final game of the school year, determining if the Yellowjackets would be heading to nationals.
Bianca wanted this, she needed this. Its what she had been longing towards ever since the first time she kicked a soccer ball.
This was the shot that would determine everything, and Bianca was the one the entire team was counting on.
"Cmon Thompson! Youve got this!" Coach Ben called out from the sidelines.
Bianca turned towards him quickly and nodded.
Without even thinking, Bianca scored the last goal of the game and she was flooded with excited screams coming from her teammates around her.
As the rest of the Yellowjackets ran towards her, it finally sank in.
The Yellowjackets were going to nationals. She really did it.
"Bianca!" Jackie exclaimed as she threw her arms around the girl who was now beaming.
"Great shot!" Van shouted at Bianca who thanked her in response.
"Buzz, buzz buzz!" the team chanted.
"We did it! We're going to nationals!" Tai squealed as she joined the group hug.
The girls were jumping up and down and radiating excitement.
"That was incredible, Im so proud of you all." Coach Ben smiled excitedly at the girls.
"You guys were amazing out there, that was a great game." Misty praised enthusiastically as she gave them a wide smile.
The Yellowjackets continued to cheer and celebrate on the field while the crowd began packing up and leaving.
The girls were talking individually and congratulating eachother when Lottie approached Bianca.
"You were really great out there." Lottie smiled.
"You were too." Bianca complimented back.
"Not nearly as great as you were though, I mean if you hadnt scored that goal back there we wouldn't be going to nationals." she reminded her.
"Not true. You scored a lot of other goals before me." Bianca laughed.
"Agree to disagree. Lets just say we helped eachother out." Lottie joked and Bianca grinned and nodded in response.
For the past few months Bianca had been repressing her feelings for Lottie but lately it had only been getting harder and harder.
It was wrong, but it felt so right.
Nobody knew about this and Bianca wanted to keep it that way. She could barely admit it to herself, so admitting this to anybody else would be even harder.
Plus, Bianca had no idea how the rest of the girls would react, especially Lottie. She just decided that it would be easier to keep it to herself. She hadnt even really came to terms with it yet.
She didnt want to deal with her feelings right now.
Like Shauna always reminded the team, no distractions.
