"A simple truth? We'll never have today again,"

I ran the red marker across the white page. It is officially day 90 of being an orphan. I think so; I don't know if my mom is alive, but I'm guessing not. Next to me, Alice tried to hit the marker cap off the camper bed. I grabbed the lid, put it back on the marker, and put it back where I got it from my bag. When I went to lie back down, a voice stopped me as did Alice by moving in my way.

"Oh jeez," Grandpa said as we all turned to look at him. He opened the window next to him as Daryl pulled up to the window, "See a way through?"

Beside him, Glenn looked at the map, "Uh, maybe we should just go back. There's an interstate bypass-"

Ian shook his head, "We can't spare the fuel, dude."

I had made my way up to the front of the RV, standing behind my brother. Daryl had gone ahead of us as he tried to find a path through the cars.

"Can we get through here?" Glenn asked and lowered out his window. Then the RV started to smoke. From the front came a loud squeal before it began to jerk and finally stopped.

"That isn't good," Ian said.

"Really? Your RV doesn't do that? Damn," He shoved my head as everyone got up from their seats and started to navigate their way out of the RV.

Everyone else stopped and exited their cars to see what was happening.

"I said it. Didn't I say it? A thousand times dead in the water," Grandpa shook his head as he rounded to the front.

Shane was the first to ask, "Problem, Dale?"

"Oh, just a small matter of being stuck in the middle of nowhere, with no hope of-"He stopped as he looked over at us kids. My brows were drawn together as my head was slightly tilted, "Okay, that was dumb,"

"Thanks for the encouragement," I gave him a thumbs up.

"If you can't find a radiator hose here-" Shane began to say, but Daryl cut him off.

"There's a whole bunch of stuff we can find," He said as he started to look through a car.

T-Dog looked around, "Can siphon more fuel from these cars for a start,"

"Can I do it? Love the smell of gas," I asked Ian. He side-eyed me before shaking his head. I gave him a frown as I crossed my arms and walked away and over to Ali.
