One of Izuku's earliest memories was the day the news broke that pro hero All Might had died.
"...presumed to have drowned after a battle with a villain off the coast of Degoba Beach, no body has been found, but after three days with no sign of the Symbol of Peace, hope is running out among rescue teams and civilians alike..."
Every TV station and radio reported it. There was no avoiding the news, and for tiny Midoriya, it was the worst day of his life up until that point. He stared blankly at the wall for hours, clutching his All Might doll, barely aware of his mother trying to coax him to eat, to do something other than stare in shock.
Was that the fate of a hero? The fate for him if he ever achieved his dream of following in All Might's footsteps? To die, his life there and vibrant one day and simply... gone the next?
The next worst day of his life came when he was four years old. About a year and a half had passed since All Might's death, and although his idol's disappearance frightened him, he hadn't given up on the dream of one day becoming a hero. Of being able to save anyone he could.
"Quirkless" The word echoed in his ears as he stared, unable to process what he was hearing. He would never... be a hero? For the first time since the news of All Might's death Midoriya felt as though a part of himself had died. He felt his dream slip through his fingers as the doctor explained to his mother.
It was ironic that two of his most vivid childhood memories involved death, in some sense of the word, since mere months after his diagnosis of being quirkless, Izuku Midoriya truly died.
Hello Readers! I have had this idea for quite a while, but due to the chaos of university, I have never had the chance to actually sit down and type the words. However, today is technically the last day of Mermay, and since that is part of the inspiration for this story, screw my papers and projects, for at least tonight, I will write this!
