Daphne Hope, called Daffy for short, squealed with laughter at a joke her friend Katie had said, before causing Katie to squeal, but with excitement, as she had pointed out a merry face in the window of a sleek, black car. the face was looking up at the great castle in awe, speechless with delight at the thought of spending another term there. But after a few moments, her head turned, and her thick brown plait whipped around as she caught sight of her friends and waved furiously, before hopping out of the expensive vehicle and launching herself towards her friends to join them. "EDITH!!!!" they called cheerily and sprinted across Malory Towers' beautiful lawn to greet her.

"I missed you! how come you didn't answer my letters?" Edith scratched her head quizzically before saying "I wrote stacks of letters! And besides, I only got some because I stayed at my uncle's for the last 2 weeks or so. Katie, did you get my letters?" Katie nodded her head, looking just as perplexed as Edith. Daffy had stayed silent, a thing most unusual for her. "Did you get the right address I wonder? Which address did you send them to?" after checking the address that she had given Edith, she shook her head, smiling. "It's wrong. You must've mistaken the letter H for the letter B. What a mistake to make! Probably some bewildered old man has received them now. Imagine his reaction!"

Though it was actually partly Daffy's fault, because, so excited on the prospect of writing to Edith in the hols, and maybe be invited to a garden party of hers or something, she had not let the ink of her pen completely dry on the paper and had accidentally smudged the writing when she had folded it, the girls laughed anyway. "Guess what happened when I was getting ready!" Katie said as they welcomed the others. "My baby brother spilt his sticky juice all over the uniform I had put on my bed! Luckily I had made a mistake and laid out my first form-sized one instead of this one." She pulled at her brown tunic as she spoke.

"Well guess what happened to me!" Edith had replied, equally as bold as Katie. "My trunk was somehow stuck on the bottom shelf of a cupboard, and no matter what my uncle did, he couldn't get it out. In the end, he had to remove the shelf above!" Daffy opened her mouth to say something, but then a far-off voice called "Edith! Don't you dare tell me that you intend to run off with your friends and not give me a second thought!" Said Uncle Charles jokingly. "If you have,............don't expect me to come at half term!" He threatened. But he had a twinkle in his eye as he talked.

"Oh uncle, I'm so sorry!" Edith said as she ran back towards him. Do come at half-term, please! I'm just so excited to see my friends again!" she grabbed her night case as she said this, and it burst open, littering the contents everywhere. "Oh, alright." Uncle Charles said as he bent down to help Edith pick up her mess of items. "But mind you, if you don't toe the line, there will be consequences!" he said, trying to look stern. "I suppose I'd better take your trunk out too. What you put in there to make it so heavy I can't imagine!"
