It had been 1511 long, cold years of imprisonment. Hadrian Potter-Black and Tom Riddle, cunning as they were, managed to escape the confines of their magic-siphoning cell. All they had to do then was to find some kind of exit to this massive prison complex.
“Where are the Muggles?” asked Hadrian aloud, his emerald eyes scanning about the maze of corridors for anything at all, “We haven’t seen any in a while.”
“Dunno, hades,” replied Tom, “but we need to find a way out of this place.”
The halls stretched onwards; the two wizards’ silent footsteps echoed along the pale stone walls.
“What would we do then,” voiced Hadrian, “if we get out, I mean?”
“Talk, for one thing,” Tom laughed calmly. If anyone still existed outside the confines of their prison, it would be a blessing. Things got boring when you only had each other to talk to for what felt like an eternity.
Tom opened his mouth to speak again but was interrupted when he and Hadrian noticed something.
“A door!” Hadrian exclaimed. This may have been the most excited he’d been in centuries. Tom was just as stoked. “An exit!..” he wished aloud, “…or so i hope…”
Their excitement would have to wait, cut short by the realization that there were several old locking mechanisms embedded around the sagging door frame. The boys’ eyes locked in perplexion. They would have to get through somehow.
Hadrian swore under his breath. “Wonder if I can even cast spells anymore, it’s been so long.”
The Muggles, it seemed, had built their prison with a purpose in mind: Detaining magical beings. Even then, the cold walls seemed to leech the magic from their bones. It was said that in their greed, the humans stored the energy to craft powerful weapons.
“Let’s try breaking it,” supposed Tom.
After numerous tries, hoping the metal was either old enough to break easily or have some luck with the combinations, the locks broke one by one. Rusty bits of twisted metal fell to the ground with a loud clang that reverberated through their whole bodies. Together, Tom and Hadrian were able to get the door open. It was as they had surmised. An exit.
“Woah,” whispered Hadrian as if the splendor of the outside world suppressed his ability to speak, “Tom, it’s so beautiful, there's so much…” he paused for a second to contemplate, “…green…” He grinned as he finally felt the warm embrace of Lady Magic, but something was different—she seemed to be so calm, now.
“…It’s as if she’s finally won,” Hadrian voiced aloud, quickly stopping himself out of embarrassment. He thought the feeling might’ve just been a side effect of their isolation from the outside world, but Tom could feel it too.
“You’re right, my love,” Tom interjected comfortingly, “it’s like she isn’t fighting to survive anymore. The plants are so lush, there are animals everywhere…” Tom paused for a moment; something was off: “Where are the Muggles?”
Hadrian blinked. “I dunno.” It did seem weird: they hadn’t encountered a single guard throughout their whole escapade. Not even a janitor. “To be honest, it doesn’t bother me. They imprisoned us, after all, to make weapons, no less. Typical Muggles,” concluded Hadrian.
Tom seemed to agree. “So, what now?” he asked. “I suppose we either explore the surrounding area or take a break here.” Tom was concerned for Hadrian, thinking he might have grown tired over their long journey through the labyrinth of cells and corridors. Hadrian assured him he was okay. “Let’s explore for a bit,” he said excitedly, “I’ll let you know if I need a break.”
