Aurora is sure that she will never be used to the way that people are looking at her. She feels like she's having an out of body experience, as though she too is one of her peers gawking on, watching her every move, surveying every lingering touch from Steve. It's the strangest first day of school she's ever endured -- people that would have usually pushed past her in the hall stop to talk to her, girls from her history class compliment her hair, the girl from the yearbook club asks for a photo of herself and Steve on the bleachers, and, currently, she's receiving a lecture from Barbara Holland in the girl's locker rooms.
"It's nice, don't get me wrong!" The redhead speaks as she fastens up the shoelaces of her plimsoles. Aurora wants to groan as the conversation goes on; half tempted to bang her head against the metal locker to get her friend to stop. Nancy stands beside them, twiddling her fingers awkwardly. "But I explicitly remember you saying you'd never get a perm last year after Cindy Brown got those chemical burns."
"Seriously?" The blonde grumbles, shimmying her uniform-issued skort up her thighs. "It's hair, Barb."
"I think it's really pretty." Nancy tries, instantly shut up by the glare that the redhead sends her way.
"It may be hair, but it's your hair, Rory. It feels like Steve's trying to turn you into someone you're not."
"Stop it." Aurora grumbles, cheeks flushing as a group of girls walk past, smiling brightly at her. She returns it close-lipped, not quite sure what to do with herself.
"No, I won't." Barb crosses her arms, P.E. top creasing with the movements. "Are you seriously telling me that you don't look like a blonde version of Taylor right now? You are not that stupid."
Brows furrow, hurt crossing Rory's face. "I'm not stupid at all, Barb. Don't talk to me like that." It may be the first disagreement they've ever had, but the saccharine girl doesn't care, not when she's trying to do anything but reflect on Barb's words. It's a comment she wants to ignore.
Barb relents, sighs as she drops her arms to her sides. "I didn't mean it like that."
"Mhmm." Aurora replies deadpan, moving to take off her striped shirt.
"Look, I just want you to— is that a push-up bra?"
And she's red-hot again. Embarrassment floods over the shortest amongst them. She would move to cover herself up if it weren't too late already. Her two best friends have already seen the white lace, eyes wide at the sight.
"Let me see!" Nancy giggles, cheeks high with the force of her grin. Her hands reach out towards her friend. Aurora has to bat them away with her P.E. shirt, eventually giggling along with Nancy, trying to ignore the serious glare Barb throws her way. They tussle about haphazardly, squealing like little girls.
