Paper Sword

"...And just one last fold," I whispered to no one. I put the final folds of paper into place while sitting on the floor. "Done." My paper crown is finished. It's a little ruff, with sloppy folds and uneven corners, but for my first time, I think it came out pretty good. I hold my paper creation in front of me and marvel at it.

"What do you think dragon?"

I look at my pug, Dragon, lying at my knees. He says nothing and is currently sleeping on his side with his tongue hanging out. What was I expecting?

I named him Dragon because of my love for fantasy creatures. The name fit him perfectly after I learned of his love of sleep. I even bought him a dragon costume. But ever since then, it has become a portable sleeping bag. He loves the thing, and whenever I have to take it off him, it's the only time he ever tries to bite me.

Looking back at my creation, I grin to myself

Looking back at my creation, I grin to myself. I spent two days trying to fold this crown, messing it up and ripping the paper, but now I have finally managed to do it. I place the crown on my head and feel a sense of accomplishment. I stand to look in my dresser mirror. I feel more confident than ever before. Today is the day I finally defeat my enemy.

I grab my paper sword that's on the dresser. I made it a few days ago, and like the crown, it took me a while to finish. I rush out of my room and make my way to the end of the hall towards the staircase. Dragon has woken up from his nap at this point, and I can hear his nails scrape the wooden floor as he chases after me.

I run downstairs into the living room and see Mom sitting in her chair reading. Dad is stirring something in a pot in the connected kitchen.

"Sweety, what are you up to?" Mom asks.

"Nothing Mom, I'm just going out for a bit." I hurriedly pull on my shoes and rush outside before she could reply.

I leap off the front porch and run into the forest surrounding our house. It's warm out today, perfect for t-shirts and adventure. Not too humid, which is nice, and only two mosquitoes so far. The uncut, dew-covered grass beneath my feet is soaking my shoes as I jog away from home. Dragon, who decided to tag along, tries to keep up with me but his short little legs make it difficult.

The farther we weave our way through the woods, the harder the terrain. We climb over rocks and leap over small streams. A clear blue sky above reassures me that today would be the day.

We've been travelling for a few hours now and needed to rest. We stop at a clearing and I find a tree to sit against. My breathing is heavy from climbing and running over hills in the last hour. Dragon is no better, as he sits beside me panting his little heart out. We haven't even reached our destination yet and were already exhausted. I stare up at the sky, the sun halfway to reaching its peak. I close my eyes and feel the soft breeze on my face. The cool grass is nice to sit on for my aching legs. The sounds of wind moving through the trees is so quiet and calming.
