You woke up bright and early as the sun beamed down through your curtains. After months of overcast, frost-bitten weather that melted into endless rainy spring days, you found yourself grateful for any chance to see the sun. No wonder you woke up in a sweat, it was finally sunny! You yawned, standing up and making your way toward the window. Tossing the curtains open and unlatching your window, you take a deep breath and take in the lovely sounds. The joyful chirping of robins and cardinals underscored the soft crescendo of rustling trees, hitting you with a feeling of serenity. That was until you heard Frank's voice cut through, grumbling about something you couldn't quite make out. You couldn't help but crack a smile.
Looks like they got an early start to the day.
Making your way over to your closet, you got dressed for the day, choosing to be extra colorful to celebrate the particularly cheerful weather. You hummed absentmindedly to yourself throughout the process, excited at the prospect of finally being able to play your violin outside. You had promised Sally that you would play for one of the shows she was putting together, which she insisted on being outside. Considering how out of hand her shows could get, that was probably a good idea in all honesty.
You shuddered at the memory of the last play she did. What was supposed to be a rendition of Peter Pan turned into an all-out fight involving glitter, paint, and whatever else we could get our hands on, thanks to Julie "accidentally" dropping a bucket of pixie dust on Wally's head. Poor Poppy nearly had a heart attack from the whole ordeal. You were scrubbing sparkles out of your hair and clothes for weeks afterward.
With a quick glance in the mirror, you decided that you were ready to go. You were anxious to finally get a taste of summer, so you didn't want to dwell on your outfit for much longer. Hastily grabbing your bag, you made it downstairs and out of the front door. Immediately, you spotted Frank in the distance, still grumbling to himself. Curious, you walked over to him. He was frantically looking around, clearly troubled by something.
"Oh, hello." Frank said curtly.
"Hi! You look troubled, can I help at all?"
Frank rubbed his temples and sighed, hesitating for a moment.
"As a matter of fact, yes." He grumbled. "But you cannot tell anyone about it, okay?"
You raised an eyebrow at that. Frank was blunt and a bit cagey at times, but never secretive. It made you wonder what exactly they were so concerned about hiding. It also made you want to help them all the more.
"Okay." you nodded.
"Good. I..." He paused and looked around, making sure no one else was watching him. "...I wanted to surprise Eddie with something, but the blasted wind blew it away. I'm trying to find it, but it's just disappeared!"
"Alright, then I can help you look!" you say "What does it look like, exactly?"
Frank lets out another sigh and looks away, hiding the blush creeping onto their face. "You'll know if you see it."
Not wanting to question further, you nod and begin looking. You started near Frank's house, checking inside of the window boxes, sifting among the flowers in his garden, and even craning your neck to make sure it wasn't stuck in the vines that hung from the roof. When that was unsuccessful, you moved onto Julie's house, searching high and low for anything that looked out of place. You went through that cycle, checking under benches, inside of bushes, and in between cobblestones, yielding nothing. You were about to give up when you noticed something unusual sticking out of a tree.
You looked around, not seeing anyone else but Frank, who was busy furiously searching the edge of the forest a few yards away. Making your way toward the tree, the strange thing becomes clearer and clearer. It was blue, which stood out from the orange tree it had been stuck into. You stopped once you were directly under it, staring up in disbelief. It was too high up to reach like this.
