Hyun-mi sat alone in a dark corner of her apartment, nursing an almost empty bottle of soju. She had never been the type for drama, but here she was--a woman out of time, out of friends, and out of luck. She tried not to think about the past as she took a long swig of soju, hoping to drown her troubles, but it was no use. The past always caught up with you, always found a way to claw at your heart. Who could have known that she would end up right back at square one?
Hyun-mi could feel herself beginning to slip further into her thoughts, and the more she thought about her situation, the more helpless she felt. Nothing seemed to add up, nothing seemed to make sense, and nothing seemed to matter. The more she tried to rationalize and justify the things that had happened, the more lost she became, and the more her world began to crumble. The only thing that mattered now was trying to hold onto what she had left, and with each passing day that got harder and harder.
The silence was unbearable. It was as if every thought that once held meaning was now stripped of all significance, and she was reduced to a hollow shell of her former self. She felt like she was going insane. She wanted to scream, to shout, to beat her feet against the ground and cry out to the heavens, but she couldn't. She was frozen, trapped in her own mind, unable to express herself or make sense of any of it. It was the worst feeling she had ever experienced.
She stood, swaying slightly. She was still drunk, but the alcohol had not helped her mood. And she still felt that empty hopelessness that hovered over her like a thick cloud. She desperately wanted to escape, to forget, but she knew that was impossible. She had to face reality, and the reality was that nothing made sense anymore. Her friends were gone, her dreams were shattered. What was left?
