chapter eleven: thanksgiving

November 28th,

"Don't be so nervous. Everything will be fine, okay?" Javi said with a smile and took her purse from her.

"Then you don't know my mother well enough" she replied and waited while he locked his car. She's already a 100% sure that her Ma will ask for a wedding because she's really religious.

Together they walked to the front door of her mother's house.

"Do I have to tell her alone?" Nova asked a little uneasily.

"No, if you want I can do it too"

"I don't know yet, can we wait until the dinner's over?"

"Just tell me when you're ready and then we'll tell your family, okay?" he said and gently squeezed her hand to calm her down.

"Okay" Nova replied and rang the bell.

A few seconds later the door opened and her sister stood in front of them. "Hey guys!" she said with a smile and let them in.

"Hi Adriana, I missed you" Nova told her sister and hugged her tightly.

"I missed you too" Adriana told her, and then went over to Javi.

"Well, now you're a part of this family. I'm so happy that you're finally official" Nova's sister told him and also hugged him.

Adriana knew they were a couple from day one, because Nova called her excitedly right away. But today was the first day since Mother's Day for Nova's family to see Javier again.

"Javi darling, hi!" Nova's mother exclaimed excitedly when she came out of the kitchen with a spatula in her hand.

"Hi Mrs. Flores" he told her with a polite smile and Nova grinned slightly. She found it funny how little her Ma liked him at first and how much she loved him now.

After being hugged by her mother, Nova saw how she pointed to Nova's cardigan, "Should I hang that up?"

"Oh no it's okay, I'm a bit cold" she replied nervously. Because the cardigan did a pretty good job of hiding her stomach. Nova wasn't ready to tell her family right now.

"Oh okay, well, you want something to drink?" her mother then asked them.

"Yeah sure, thank you" Nova replied and followed her into the kitchen. And there sat her brother Diego with a sad expression on his face and a beer in his hand.

"Hi Diego" Nova greeted him with a sympathetic smile. His wedding should have taken place two months ago but he's still no better.

"Hi Nova, Javier" he replied with a weak and fake smile and took a sip of his beer. Nova wanted to ask him how he was feeling, but she knew he would lie and say he was fine.

Diego finished his beer, got up and walked over to the fridge.
"You guys want some beer?"

"Ah, no thank you" Nova told him.

"You're sure?"

Nova just nodded and poured herself and Javi water in glasses.

Diego held up a beer for Javier, "I don't wanna drink alone"

"I'm sorry buddy, I still have to drive"

"Well okay, more beer for me I guess" he mumbled and closed the fridge again.

After a few moments of silence with Diego staring at Nova, he started talking to his sister again. "Can we talk for a moment?"

"Ah yeah sure" she replied and followed him into the bathroom.
