waking up

A blinding light forced my eyes open. Everything was blurry. I felt really dizzy. I could feel my hand being stroked gently.

I looked around the place. Where am I? What happened to me? And why does my head hurt?

I turned sideways and saw a lady next to me. Who is she? And why is she stroking my hand? I barely even know her! She was on the phone talking to someone.

Based on the appearance of the room, it seems like I am in the hospital. But what am I doing here? I don't remember being in any accident. The lady looked over at me.

She looked really shocked. Tears started to spill from her eyes and she planted kisses all over me. I looked at her with a really confused expression.

"I thought I lost you Miranda. The doctors said you wouldn't make it. I'm so glad you are alive!" She cried, holding my hand and crying. I snatched my hands away from her.

"Uh, do I know you?" I asked.

The lady looked taken aback and looked hurt.

"Don't you remember me darling? I'm your mother. You were in a school accident. Remember?" She told me.

I am confused. I don't remember being in a school accident. And she is my mother?

"I'm sorry, but I barely know you. And this is a prank right? I don't remember being in a school accident. And I certainly don't remember having a mother," I said. The lady started crying a bit. She then called a doctor and he came rushing into the room.

He immediately rushed towards me and checked my eyes with his pen light, and checked my heartbeat. He said I looked good. The lady explained what happened and the doctor looked taken aback.

"Miranda, do you remember anything at all? This is your mother. You are safe." He said. Huh?

"I'm sorry, but I'm really confused right now. I don't remember having a mother. And I really don't remember being injured to go to the hospital," I told him. I felt guilty into making that lady cry, but I really don't know her. Who knows? She might be a kidnapper pretending to be my mother!

"Well, how do I put it? You've been asleep. In a coma. For 3 months. I guess you fell very hard that you lost your memory," he said. Huh? Coma? Memory loss? Fall? Okay, if I was confused before, let's say I am completely confused.

The doctor brought that lady to another room and when she came back, she smiled sadly.

"Look, Miranda. You might not know me. But I AM your mother," she said. She took out her phone and showed some pictures. In one of them, it was her, a boy I had never seen before and me. In front of a dragon statue. Sure enough, it was the same lady.

"That boy is your brother. Oh, he's gonna be heartbroken when he finds out you don't remember him anymore. Can you please pretend that you know him. So that he won't be sad?" She begged. I had a brother?

I'm all into not breaking little kids' heart, but I barely know him. He seems harmless though. I guess I owe that lady for being mean. I nodded and said I will try.
