If everyone you ever loved died in a house fire, would you:
A. feel numb
B. not believe
C. scream
D. fall to the ground crying
or
E. all of the above?
I chose E because that is exactly what happened to me. My name is Devin Gibson, I'm almost seventeen years old and everything I ever loved was taken from me in a house fire.
*two and a half years earlier*
"Sweetie, there's something we need to tell you..." Oh what did I do this time, I thought. "What is it mom?" "Honey it's your uncle Ed he-" "Oh no, what happened? Is he alright?" I was freaking out.
My uncle Ed and I have always been like two peas in a pod since I can remember. When I'm sad I always give him a call and he picks me up then takes me back to his house where we will eat ice cream and I tell him what was wrong. He's the only one who ever cared. My two older sister have always been jealous of how close we are.
"No nothing happened, it's just..." my mom trailed off leaving me imagining the worst case scenarios in my head. "Mom what is it?" My patience was now very thin.
She looked over at my dad who was walking over and he placed his hands on my shoulders. He was looking me straight in the eyes when he broke the news. "Baby, he moved back to London."
My mom and uncle are fraternal twins and they grew up in London, but once they turned nineteen they decided they wanted to see what America was like so they got an apartment together and then two years later my mom met my dad, they fell in love, got married, and then poof, my sisters and I were brought into this world. All the while my uncle was striving to move up in his job and he succeeded so now he is a very successful business man.
I felt my heart drop into the pit of my stomach. "What?!" I screamed as years began making their descent down my face. "He left me..." I said in less than a whisper.
"Sweetie-" but that's all I heard because I was already running up the stairs to my room and slamming the door shut. I was laying on my bed crying when I heard my door open. I look up to see my mom standing on the doorway with a warm smile on her face.
"Devin, honey are you alright?" "Mum I don't want to talk right now." I practically yelled, I know it isn't their fault he left but I was so upset. Her smile turns into a hurt look. "Well I just want you to know that your father and I love you so much and we will never leave you like you uncle Ed." And with that she left me alone to cry in my empty room on my already tear soaked bed. After that day I never wanted to see my uncle ever again.
* Two days before Present Day*
"DEVIN!" I heard my mom scream. Oh crap. It finally came, oh how I love really late report cards. At least I enjoyed most of my summer. I walked into the kitchen and saw my mum and dad scowling at my report card in my mums hand.
"What is this?" She looked up frowning. "Well mum I need you to be more specific because my first response is that it is clearly my report card." I said with sarcasm. "Devin Marie Gibson! One B, three C's, one D, and one F and in Spanish? How did this happen?" It was really hard to take her seriously with her British accent.
"Well yo no comprendo español." I said feeling accomplished. "Devin you know what I mean." She said not looking very amused at what I said. "Ok well let's think... Oh maybe it's the fact that I'm not perfect like Hannah or Shelby or I just hate school!" I yelled the last part. "Devin watch yourself." My dad warned.
"It's true!" I argued. "I don't give a rats butt! I am your father and you live under my roof therefore you will do as I say!" He was so angry that the vein in his neck was sticking out. "Whatever." I mumbled.
"Excuse me?" My dad snarled. "I said whatever!" I yelled. I kid you not if this were a cartoon we would totally see smoke coming from my dads ears because of how angry he is now. "James..." My mom warned. "What? I'm fine." He snapped. Just then we hear the front door and that's when I remember that my sisters are coming home from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama where they both got full ride scholarships.
"Hey everyone!" Shelby called from the living room, she is the eldest and a junior in college while Hannah is a sophomore. At the sound of their voices it was obvious how my parents relaxed it they were still angry. "We're in here." My mum called from the kitchen. "Woah what's wrong with y'all?" Hannah said when she walked I. And saw my parents faces.
"Report card." Dad said so icily it gave me chills (see what I did there). "May we see?" Shelby asked. "NO!" I snapped. My mum was just staring at me as she gave them my report card. "Mum!" I whined. "Oh my god, Dev!" Hannah said with the same look of disappointment I've seen too many times to count. I rolled my eyes really not in the mood to continue this conversation. Shelby saw, "Devin, you're almost seventeen years old. Act your age!" That's it. "Oh I'm sorry, you never acted like this did you? Well since I'm supposed to be just like you then I need to be perfect right? Oh wait, I'M NOTHING LIKE YOU!" I was so done, it has always been 'Devin your sisters never had difficulty in this class' or my personal favorite ' Devin your sisters always enjoyed going to homecoming so why won't you?' But obviously I'm nothing like them. We don't even look alike, they both have straight golden hair, beautiful blue eyes, and flawless skin while I have long curly brown hair, green eyes, and a mass amount of freckles covering my face. They are both skinny and petite while I tower over most of the girls in school.
"That's a shame..." My mum mumbled. As soon as she said it she looked up with a shocked look on her face. My heart immediately crumbled. "Devin, I'm sorry I didn't-" but before she could finish I was already running out the door with tears running down my face. I kept for about ten blocks when I felt my phone vibrating in my back pocket. When I pulled it out I saw that it was my mum and I ignored the call and kept walking. Where am I walking you may ask? Honestly I have no clue. That is, until I I ended up in front of my uncles old house. This just made me more upset so I turned around and walked in the opposite direction of which I came.
I'm not really sure exactly how long I've been walking but about an hour ago the constant vibrating of my phone stopped, thank god. I did somehow end up in time square and I pulled out my phone to see thirty six missed calls and one hundred texts from my family, I also noticed the time and that made me gasp because I have been walking around the streets of New York for nearly five freaking hours! "Crap." My parents are probably worried sick, I started heading home, I would walk in and go straight to my room ignoring them completely. "Yeah, that's a good idea." I congratulate myself. I stopped in the middle of the side walk. Oh my god, I'm talking to myself... I'm going insane, I just know it. It took me about fifteen minutes of speed walking to end up a block from the street my house is on. And that is the moment I started smelling the smoke.
