Reyna was wondering if they would have enough time to make a run for it before they were chopped to bits by a hundred headed lizard. Before she had managed to reach a conclusion though, the air before them started to shift and shimmer. Reyna instinctively moved back a few paces. The Daughter of Neptune, however, stood her ground.
The shimmering got more excited and suddenly Reyna was starting at four magnificently beautiful Greek women. They wore white chiton on their dusky skin, their hair flowed down in midnight waves. Reyna had never worried about how she looked but she suddenly felt conscious.
"Hello, Cousins!", Pearl greeted them with a soft smile.
"They shouldn't be here", one of the Hesperides said in a cold detached voice.
"They need to see, Aigel.", Pearl replied calmly.
"We cannot allow you to pass", the woman insisted.
"You also know you cannot stop me if I really want to get through", Pearl replied with a confidence Reyna wasn't feeling at all.
"Please", Pearl said and Reyna could hear the plea in her voice. "I have to do this. I do not want to fight with you. Or Ladon. I cannot bring myself to!"
"You should have thought that before walking in here with enemies."
"They are not your enemies, Aigel", Pearl said, her voice taking a dangerous edge. "They do not intend to hurt any of you"
"We are on opposite sides of this war, Pearl" a different woman said. "There's nothing you can do to change that."
"Are we really, Erytheia?" Pearl questioned. "You already lost a sister to this battle. It wasn't us who killed her."
"She would have been alive if it weren't for that stupid Goddess!", Aigel snapped, the frustration and pain in her voice clear as day.
"Artemis did not kill Zoe", Pearl said, staring the Hesperide in the face. "Atlas did. You know that as well as I do. And if we do not stop them, millions of more innocent lives will be claimed."
"As if the Gods are any better!", Aigel sniffed disdainfully.
"Some of them aren't. Some are.", Pearl replied with a shrug. "Just like all Titans aren't evil."
"Then why does the war even matter?"
"It matters because the age of the gods has demigods in it. We're not all good either but we help maintain the balance. A balance that never existed in any of the previous ages. You know this Aigel. If this war is lost, it won't just mean the end of the gods. It would mean the end of the world as we know it. Do you really want to be responsible for that? Even slightly?"
Nobody spoke.
"That's what I thought", Pearl huffed. "Now please, let us through. We're not here to fight. We just need to take a peak and then we'll be gone."
A different sister moved forward and placed a hand on Pearl's shoulder. The shadows around her swirled and seemed to settle on her like a blanket. When the woman moved back, all Reyna could see was a dark humanoid form.
"Be careful", the woman said, a strange melancholy in her voice. "We do not wish for another loss this soon."
"Thank you, Hesperia", Pearl replied, somehow mirroring her voice; similar yet so different.
