Humanity has been at the blood soaked bottom of the food chain for over two hundred days, and the hardest winter of thirteen year old Emery Hawthorne's life has just passed. Having spent a good portion of the end of the world in the safety of Woodbury, Georgia, she never expected to ever have to experience the terrors and traumas and heartbreaking losses that the outside world offers. 

Until the arrival of the samurai and the sleeping girl, Emery and her older brother Reese had a quiet, peaceful life in the apocalypse. Then she and the rest of the town realize their leader is more bloodthirsty than the walkers, and she is evacuated and relocated to a new safe haven where she meets an even crazier and more compassionate bunch of survivors that are doing their best to keep themselves and now the refugees alive. 

But safety in numbers can only last so long. What will happen when the terrors of Emery and Reese's past come back to haunt them? A fight is certain, but will they be ready to spill blood to protect what they have? Or will they be sent to their rest with the world?
