The next morning arrived and I got up quickly. I ate some breakfast and went outside. I looked down the road. Miles wasn't there. None of my family was awake. It was probably very early in the morning. Suddenly I heard a noise coming from down the road. I looked and saw Miles standing there on his scooter looking at me.

"I was wondering when you were going to come out," smiled Miles. "Do you want to play catch again?" asked Miles.

"Yeah," I nodded excitedly.

I brought the ball over to Miles and we started playing catch. It was so fun. I used to feel like my life was meaningless, but then, I felt like it had more meaning when I was with Miles. Just then my Dad saw Miles and Miles saw my Dad.

"I have to go Jimmy, I'll see you later," said Miles and he ran to his house. Dad looked at me.

"Who was that Jimmy?" asked Dad

"A neighbor," I replied. Dad gave me a look and went back inside. I looked towards Miles' house, but he didn't come out of his house for the rest of that day. So then I thought, because Miles didn't come to me, maybe I should go to him.

I jumped over the wall and ran to Miles' house. I knocked on the door but got no response. I looked into the living room window. The girl, who I assumed was his older sister was there reading a book. She looked out of the window and immediately got up which was quickly followed by shouting throughout the house.

"Jimmy's here?" said a familiar voice. I was Miles. I could hear a lot of movement throughout the house. I saw the inner door of the house open and Miles was standing there with a wide smile on his face. He began to open the outer door so he could greet me.

"Be careful Miles!" called his sister.

"I will," Miles called as he closed the doors. "Jimmy!" he said hugging me. "You want to play catch?" he asked.

"Yeah," I nodded. Miles went into his back garden and grabbed a rugby ball. we played catch for about ten minutes until an unsettling sound disrupted my joy.

"Jimmy!" called a voice. I turned around and saw it was Dad. I saw Dad talking to Miles' Dad and his arms were folded.

"I'm sorry if he caused any inconvenience," said Dad. Just then my Dad saw me. "Anyway we should be going," said Dad. He dragged me back home.

When we go home he told me to go straight to bed without any dinner. As I was going to bed I heard my Dad on the phone to somebody. I listened closer.

"...Yes, an extended fence. I'd like it tomorrow at the latest. Alright, thank you, I'll see you tomorrow," and with that he put the phone down. I didn't have a very good feeling about that phone call.

The next day I woke up to the sound of machinery. I looked outside and saw burly men in overalls doing something to the wall where Miles and I would play catch and talk. I ran to find my Dad.

"What's going on?" I demanded when I finally found my Dad.

"You are never going to see that boy again, it's for your own good and his," said Dad and he went back to his newspaper. There was nothing I could do about it.

When the wall extension was finished I didn't see Miles for a long time, weeks in fact. I missed him dearly. Then, after a few weeks we met each other through the cracks of the gate.

"Jimmy, I'm not going to be here for a while, I'm going to be leaving for Canada, but you will always be my best friend and I will never forget you," said Miles. I was so confused, and I had so many questions, but before I could ask them he began walking back to his house. His family were packing things into their car, big bags and suitcases. the car engine started and they seemed to be leaving for Canada now. I wasn't prepared to lose Miles now.

I jumped over the gate and crossed the road before my family could catch me, but the last thing I saw was a white van. It hit me in the side of my body and my hind legs. I was lying on the middle of the road. I began to go cold, as if I had no fur to keep me warm. The next thing I knew, I was watching me best friend leave me forever, and me leaving him without properly saying goodbye.
