Natsuki and Yuri walked down the mostly empty hallway, hand in hand. Today had been their first day back from winter break, about a week after the fateful fireworks festival. As disappointed as she was that she was back in school—breaks never felt long enough, did they?—Natsuki was also very happy to be back. She and Yuri hadn't been able to see each other since the festival; they had texted and called every day, but today was the first time they'd seen each other since they officially began dating. And as dumb as it was, the distance only being for six days and having heard Yuri's voice on every one...Natsuki had missed her girlfriend dearly.
Well, maybe it wasn't that dumb. After all, when she'd practically tackled Yuri in a hug at lunch and grumbled that she'd missed her, Yuri had hugged her back just as tightly and said she'd missed her too. And Yuri was the furthest thing from dumb that existed on this planet.
Now, minutes after the last bell had rung, the girls were on their way to Natsuki's favorite place in the world. Her favorite place other than in Yuri's arms, of course.
Natsuki groaned internally at that unbidden thought. She disgusted herself. But...it was true.
The pair stopped as they arrived at the door to the Literature Club. Through the glass pane, Natsuki could see the familiar figures of Monika and Sayori having an animated conversation inside. She felt a flash of warmth; she'd missed her other two best friends as well. She was, however, not really looking forward to them freaking out over her and Yuri and teasing both of them endlessly. She'd texted them the very good news the morning after the festival, so they would at least be aware, but she already knew it wouldn't lessen their in-person reactions. And it was bad enough when they wouldn't shut up about her crushing on Yuri!
Yuri, who seemed to read her mind, squeezed her hand with a smile. "Don't run away on me now," she said teasingly.
"If I was running away, I would drag you with me," Natsuki retorted, though she squeezed Yuri's hand in return. "You've got no idea how brutal they are. I say this with love: they're awful."
Yuri giggled at her mock misery, which wasn't entirely mock. "How do you know, then?"
"Because they gave me endless crap about crushing on you."
Yuri turned her head to Natsuki, eyebrows raised in surprise. "They knew you liked me?"
"Yep, they worked it out on their own. And it's a miracle you didn't pick up on all their...insinuations. Mon and Say are about as subtle as school bells." After a beat, she nudged Yuri with her shoulder and added coyly, "And as you said at the festival, I don't think 'like' covers it."
Something flickered deep in Yuri's eyes at Natsuki's own unsubtle insinuation. But like Yuri had also said at the festival, it was too soon for them to say it aloud, when they had only been dating for a week. For now it was enough for each of them to know that the other felt the same. So Yuri simply smiled softly and said, "Shall we?"
"Let's do it," Natsuki said, and swung the classroom door open, keeping a firm grip on her girlfriend's hand.
Both Sayori's and Monika's heads snapped toward them. In unison, their eyes flicked down to their joined hands, then back up. Monika clapped her hands together, grinning delightedly, while Sayori let out a squeal and began jumping up and down.
Natsuki exchanged a wry look with Yuri. No escaping now.
"Oh my gosh, ohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh!" Sayori quite literally hopped all the way over to them, enveloping both of them in a tight, classic Sayori hug. She was still bouncing. "It really happened! You're together! YES!"
