Curious

Prologue

A loud rumbling awoke me from my all but peaceful sleep and I bolted upright. My head was pounding and my heart was racing. Sweat clung to my forehead as I looked around but came up with nothing but complete darkness.

Where am I? What is this place? All I knew was my name and that I had a brother named Thomas. There was a loud screech and a rumbling of the floor making me fly backwards and into the wall.

I groaned in pain and looked up. My eyes widened when I saw a group of girls all ages and races gathered around the hole I was in. A rope was tossed down and I went over to it climbing up.

Once I got up I crawled forward and collapsed onto the grass. "Well what do we have here?" Asked a girl. She had dark brown curly hair and dark brown eyes. Her skin tone was dark and she was tall and strong. She held out a hand and I grabbed it.

She yanked me up with a lot of force and as I tried to regain my balance she laughed. "Where am I?" I asked. I was surprised by my voice. It was strained and raspy while my mouth was dry and my throat sore.

"This is your new home." She told me. I looked around taking in my surroundings.

The ground beneath me was moist like it had just stormed and the sky which was filled with an assortment of blues and pinks looked clear and beautiful. There were small huts that lined most of the large field while the rest was occupied by farm land.

What stood out the most was the tall grey walls that surrounded the place. "What is that?" I asked pointing to the part of the wall that was opened. "That is the maze. Number one rule? never go into the maze unless your a runner." She told me and I smiled.

"Whats your name?" I asked and she smiled. "My names Astris." She said holding out her hand and I shook it. "You will probably remember your name in about a day or two." She said and I furrowed my eyebrows.

"My name is Thalia." I said and she looked taken aback by my answer. "Do you remember anything else?" She asked and I nodded. "I have a brother named Thomas." I said and she furrowed her eyebrows. "Very...interesting." She said.

A girl came up she had dirty blonde hair and brown eyes. "Hi Im Narita." She said holding out her hand and I shook it. "Im Thalia." I said and she looked shocked. "You remember your name?" She asked and I nodded. "Not only that but she remembers her brothers name to." Astris said amazed.

"Get Charlie to show her where she'll sleep." Astris told Narita and she nodded running off. "How can I go into the maze?" I said curious. "You can't go in unless your a runner." She shrugged.

"What do runners do?" I asked. "Runners run the maze every day looking for a way out and maybe even other people." She explained and I nodded. "What happens if we find others?" I asked. "We team up with them." She said.

Before I could ask any more questions a girl ran back with Narita. She seemed to be about thirteen or fourteen with light brown hair. She was short and chubby. Her pale face was flushed an her light brown eyes looked tired.

"Hi Im Charlie!" She said holding out her hand. I shook it and smiled. "Im Thalia." I replied. She looked shocked like the others but quickly masked it. "Come on Ill show you your new place to sleep." She said and grabbed my hand dragging me off to one of the huts.

We walked inside and she took me over to a cot that was in the corner. It was the only thing that occupied the small room. "Charlie?" I called before she could leave. She spun around to face me an eyebrow raised. "What do I look like?" I asked because I was generally curious.

"You have long jet black hair and bright blue eyes. Your skinny and look like you do a lot of sports. Your tan like you spend a lot of time outside." She said and I smiled. "Thanks Char." I said and a flash of recognition crossed her face.

She shook it off and smiled leaving the room. I fell back on the cot taking deep breaths. I finally stood back up and walked outside. I looked around and many girls were off to work at the fields. Something intrigued me about all these girls making me even more curious.

My eyes scanned over the field once more before taking a deep breath. This is my new home.
