The rain was pouring hard, dripping effortlessly into the alleyway, and splashing across the garbage strewn ground. My hair, along with the rest of me, was soaked. I reached out for the small hand behind me, listening to the crinkling of the rubber raincoat.
"Slow down," the little voice whined, "Tommy! I can't keep up!"
I looked back towards her, "C'mon Sarah, I have to get to work by four." She grabbed my outstretched hand and I pulled her closer into me. "It's not safe in this area so stay close," I whispered, recieving a nod in response.
We climbed further into the dark alleyway, losing sight of the small light that the clouds had not covered. With little to see I hurried along faster, dragging my sister behind, her whining complaints echoing across the darkened bricks. There were a few people that we had passed, mostly homeless people attempting to take cover from the cold rain, but my eyes glanced a few suspicious looking men that lurked in the shadows, waiting to catch the perfect victim.
With that thought a man dressed head to toe in black, covering his face with a ski mask approched us from the front. I glanced behind me and saw two more men in similar outfits blocking our only other exit. "Hey!" The man shouted.
"I don't have any money," I admitted, pulling Sarah to the side of me, holding her closely.
"Everyone's got something they can give," he waved to my little sister, pulling down the mask to reveal a crooked smile.
"I have a watch, its worth fifteen bucks I think." I had been through these kinds of muggings before, give them something and they'll move on to the next unsuspecting victim. I rolled up my sleeve and unlatched the cheap watch, throwing it towards the man who caught it in one hand, keeping the other steady in his pocket. "Can we go, please" I smiled nervously.
The man took a gun out from his hoodie pocket and pointed it at me. I pushed Sarah behind me and put my hands up in obedience. "It's all I have, I swear." The man used the gun to wave us on.
I grabbed Sarah, who stood quietly beside me like I had taught her to do and began to walk past the gang of men. I went to turn back towards them as we rushed away, glancing at a shadowy figure that came from behind them.
"Hey!" One of the man screamed, "What are you doing? Please, no!"
I looked back once more, frozen at the sight that I had laid out in front of me. Two of the men lay sprawled on the wet ground, one running towards me, and another, the dark figure standing eerily still behind the bodies. The man took out his gun and turned it on the figure. In one glance the shadow dissapeared and reappeared between us and the thief.
"Get back! I'm warning you, I have a gun!" The man pointed his gun at what the shadow appeared to be. It was a girl. He began firing the gun left and right at the woman who effortlesly dodged the bullets with incredible speed. I took my sisters head in a moment of adrenaline and ducked it down against the ground, splashing our bodies into a giant puddle.
And then there was silence. And pain.
"Tommy?"
I turned onto my back, looking up at the water droplets and felt for where the pain had emerged. I dragged my fingers along my stomach feeling around the burning sensation. I took my hand and looked back at its glowing red.
"Tommy!" Sarah shouted, "We need to run!" She grabbed my hand, trying to pull me back up, but I couldn't move. "Get away from me! Tommy! Get up! Stay away from us!"
The shouts began to sound like muffled echoes as my ears began to fill with muddied water and my eyes, although open, struggled to make sense of the scene around me.
