The Weird Bird lady

I Watch Gon and Grover Laugh happily. The two had met just a few days after we arrived at heavens arena and had been instant friends. as it seemed Gon was with almost anyone he met. A combination of jealousy and shame bubbles up inside me. I wish I could make friends that easily. but something about me just seems to put people off. except for Gon of course he had accepted me immediately. an apple smacks me in the head. and I look over to see Gon and Grover looking at me.

"If you're done spacing out Were playing Mario kart."

I smile and grab my controller. Grover is excellent at Most video games. Probably because his legs are so messed up. some kind of muscular disorder or so he claims. but for some reason I don't quite believe him. okay truth be told I don't trust Grover at all. I was suspicious almost the moment we met him. hes not competing at heavens arena because of his legs. but he claims to like to watch the matches. but frankly he seems much more interested in me and Gon than any of the fights.

I sigh mentally. Grover isn't the only one making me uneasy. There's the service director Mr. Brunner. we met him as soon as we qualified for the 100th floor. his job is to coordinate all the amenities offered to fighter who reach the 100th floor or higher. but something doesn't sit right about him either. however unlike Grover I cant quite identify what it is that seems so off. Trust your instincts. they're the greatest tool you have. I remember my dads training echoing through my mind. And then there's the worst one. the elevator operator Harley. she's never said so much as a word to me but seems to constantly be glaring at me. I sigh internally. I don't remember there being this many weirdos at heavens arena the last time I was here..

"Open your eyes and look at me in the mirror." I say to Sadaso. We lock eyes in the mirror and i pour all the malice I can into my aura. if I hadn't been so focused on Sadaso I might have noticed the shadows growing behind me. "Don't ever let me see your stupid face again."I smirk at the sound of Sadasos terrified sobbing as I close his door behind me. that should keep him from bothering Zushi ever again. now I just have to deal with the other two.

"Now honey?" I turn around to see the elevator operator glowering at me.

"Did you really think you'd get away with it."

I shrug. "he was an ass. he deserved it."

The woman scowls. "I don't mean Sadaso. return what you have stolen."

I frown. "The fuck are you talking about." Harley hits the emergency stop and the elevator grinds to a halt. suddenly she begins to transform. her arms morph into giant wings. her red hair forms into thick fluffy feathers. her feet morph into haggard talons. suddenly shes a nine foot tall bird lady standing over me in a stalled elevator. reflexively i activate my ren. the sudden burst of aura seems to frighten the bird lady. I take advantage of her moments hesitation and lunge forward with my assasin claws drawn and slash straight through her chest. the bird lady dissolves into dust. I take a moment to let the shock ware off. "The fuck was that shit! i ask outload. then hit the emergency lever to make the elevator start again. as the doors slide open on my floor I find Grover and Mr. Brunner  waiting and looking scared. both seem relieved to see me. I look back and forth from one to the other. "If youre looking for the weird bird lady I killed her. then I walk away towards Gons room.

Gon looks perplexed as i explain what happened in the elevator.

"why would she think you stole something? You're an assassin not a thief."

I face palm. "That's your takeaway from that story?"

Gon shrugs. "here look at this." Gon hands me a letter. "its almost time for visitation day with my sister." I stare at gon.

"I didn't know you had a sister."

Gon laughs awkwardly. "yeah shes my half sister. Her name is Sadie and she lives with her dad Julius. i only get to see her twice a year."

I frown. "So then Julius is "

"My stepdad." i mean he and my mom don't live together but they're still technically married I think." they separated right after Sadie was born. I'm not sure why." I try to think of a polite way to ask the question i have in mind. but i guess Gon must have assumed what I was thinking.

"I'm older than Sadie. My mom was six months pregnant when she met Julius."

so no adulatory I guess. still Gon looks kind of awkward. he doesn't need to be embarrassed. i know better than anyone how complicated families can be. I decide to tell him the truth.

"My parents. I mean the people I call my parents. they're actually my grandparents. my Birth mother was Illumi's twin sister. Her name was Miyuki. she died giving birth to me. she was just sixteen. but i don't know anything about my father either. all she ever said about him was that she met him in Denver." Gon and I smile at each other. ive never told anyone the truth about my family before. not that I had anyone to tell really. But sharing these secrets had definitely bonded us.  i had almost forgotten about the crazy bird lady that had tried to kill me  almost.
