Today was the day that Richard and I decided to go to school. We didn't want to go, but Richard wanted to see his friends, and I don't want to be completely stupid when I leave school for good.
While walking, Richard had come up with a way to get back at Mr. Duet for being an asshole to us all. We were looking forward to the payback, even if it goes me in trouble.
"Alexa and I made up. We're going to hang out after school today." I said
"Wow, you forgive easily,"
"Why do you say that like it's a bad thing?''
"Because, when you forgive easily, you get taken advantage of more. You get stabbed in the back more. They being to think they can do whatever they want, without consequence."
"No, they don't."
"I'm speaking of experience, Avilyn."
The two of us walked in silence until we arrived at school. I was getting more and more nervous, the closer we got to Duet's classroom. I may not be cut out for being a troublemaker, but I still am going through with it.
"Well, well, well. Looked at who finally showed up. Can't say I missed you, though." Mr. Duet said the moment we stepped into the classroom. Can't say I missed you much, either. I thought to myself.
"I expect you to look at me when I'm talking to you," Richard said, clearly pissed that we didn't give him the reaction he craved.
"Did you hear that?" Richard asked, looking around the room, acting confused.
"Hear what?" I said, trying my hardest to hold back the laughter.
"Never mind, it must have been the wind."
"Richard and Avilyn-"
"See there it goes again!"
By now, the whole class was laughing. And Mr. Duet's reaction was priceless. I swear I have never seen a person turn that shade of red.
Things were getting so out of hand that the principal had to intervene. Richard and I were instructed to follow the principal to his office after things began to settle down.
The two of us sat proudly outside the office, waiting. My name was called first.
"Have a seat," the principal instructed once I walked in.
"Well, Miss Gomez, I heard you got into some trouble earlier. Am I correct?"
"Yes," I said blankly.
"And why did you choose to misbehave?"
"Because," I answered matter-as-a-factly. "I am sick and tired of the way Mr. Duet treats us. He lectures us and gives us ridiculous amounts of homework. As well as a bunch of other stuff."
"Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that his job?"
"Well in a way, is, but-"
"But nothing, Avilyn. He is your teacher. You are to treat him like one, understand?"
I responded by nodding my head yes.
"Good, I'm glad that we're on the same page. Now, I'm going to have to give you detention. This is to take place today, after school."
"After school? I can't, I have plans. Could I please have detention tomorrow? Hell, I'll do it for the rest of the month, just not today."
"I'm afraid not, Miss Gomez. You don't get to pick and choose the days you get detention. That's the whole point of punishment.
After the principal was done reading to me, I left the office and made my way to class, late.

It wasn't until lunch hour that I saw Richard. He was eating lunch with only one other person despite him telling me he had a whole bunch of friends.
I heard his friend say something in Spanish while pointing at me (Even though I am Mexican, I never learned Spanish. My mother usually only dates white guys, Ave they don't like the idea of us communicating without them knowing what we're saying.)
"Oh, hi," Richard said, turning to face me. "What's up?"
"I was uh, I was wondering how you got to act out all the time in class without getting detention?"
"Who said I got away with it?"
"Well, I've looked for you in detention a few times in days that you sent to the principal's office, and you were never there. But I mess up once and I get detention. All because I'm a girl."
"Well first off, cut the feminist shit. It drives me crazy hearing women complain about how their lives suck. And second off, I did get detention every single time I got sent out. I just didn't show up"
"I'm sorry, I didn't know."
"Yeah, no shit. Maybe next time don't jump to conclusions."
"You know what, fuck off. At least I don't exaggerate the number of friends I have."
"What the fuck did you just say to me?" Richard asked through gritted teeth.
"You heard me," I declared stubbornly "I actually can make friends, plural. You? Not so much."
And just like that, Richard had exploded. He was yelling and presumably cursing in Spanish. The only thing he said was
"You stay the fuck away from me, bitch. Got it? I don't want to see you ever again."
He then kicked a chair and walked out.
