Caitlyn hailed a taxi outside the station and numbly climbed into the car.
"Where to Miss?" The driver asked.
"High-" Cait stopped herself. She bit her lip and looked out at the cityscape. "Actually, take me to Corbin's Apartments please." Caitlyn asked gripping Vi's key tightly in her hand. The driver nodded and pulled away to start the drive. Cait leaned back and watched the rain start again over the city. It had been drizzling for the past 3 days. In a few minutes time they had reached the building. Cait paid him with the last of the money she had on her person and stepped out on to the sidewalk. She looked up at the building she had left for what she thought would be the last time, months ago. Cait took a breath and entered the building. Security easily let her through and she was climbing to the top floor in the elevator.
Caitlyn walked down the hall and stopped at suite number 235. She pulled out the key and held it in shaky hands. Slowly she entered the key in the lock and twisted it. Cait wrapped a hand around the door knob to enter and...
It was still locked. Caitlyn looked at the door in bewilderment. She tried the key again, going the other way. Still locked. Someone had changed the lock on Vi's door? Who and why? The building owners were told expressly not to touch Vi's apartment as her case was still open as the city searched for C. Caitlyn banged heavily on the door, beating out her frustration on to the surface.
And as she was about to land her hardest blow, the door swung open. Cait swung unbalanced and almost toppled into a young boy with a large white mohawk and face paint. He looked bored and a bit annoyed.
"Can I help you?" He asked. Cait couldn't do anything but stare at him in stark shock and confusion.
"Ekko? Who are you-" A familiar voice called. Jinx made an appearance behind him. "Oh shit." Jinx sighed. Jinx looked over her shoulder and called to a third person yet unseen.
"I think we fucked up." Jinx called.
"What do you mean, 'I think we fucked up?' " A way too familiar voice called. Hearing that sound again felt like a punch to her stomach.
"Wait, was I not suppose to answer the door?" Ekko asked, in vapid confusion.
"What the hell do you fucking think?" Jinx cried. The two seemed to be conveniently ignoring Caitlyn's panic attack in the hallway outside.
"You guys opened the goddamn door? What the hell were you thinking?" Heavy boot falls came thundering towards Jinx. Jinx put a hand up and stopped whomever was on the rampage towards the doorway.
"It's a very special guest." Jinx warned through clenched teeth. The unseen person sighed.
"So that's what you mean by, 'I think we fucked up.' " Ekko looked down at Caitlyn who was slowly trying to pick herself up off the floor. He offered a hand to her. She stared at it awhile before taking it and rising to her feet. She slowly entered the apartment and looked around. The place was trashed, but not more trashed than how Vi would've kept it. There were old wrappers littering the living room. Dirty dishes piled up on every available surface that wasn't covered by city maps, hastily scribbled papers, and half finished pieces of machinery.
"So, should we?" Jinx had retreated back into the kitchen with the disembodied voice it seemed as Cait and Ekko continued to occupy the living room. Ekko looked Caitlyn up and down and smiled almost flirtatiously. He leaned back on a precarious stack of items and smirked.
"Hey there, they call me Ekko. You must be that gorgeous detective I've been hearing about." He flirted with no hesitation. Cait wrapped her arms around herself and gave him a cautious look. "Don't worry about having anything to say to my smooth lines, I've been told it's hard to keep up with me." Ekko continued. Jinx peered around the corner of the kitchen and sent him a harsh look. He gave her a sheepish grin and chuckled. His laughter however, knocked over his support beam of stacked dishes and he went tumbling to the ground. Caitlyn jumped back. Jinx laughed triumphantly and turned back to the kitchen.
"Please tell me you'll forget this ever happened." Ekko groaned, peeling himself off the floor.
"Already trying to.." Caitlyn murmured. Ekko nodded his thanks as Jinx reappeared. She looked at Caitlyn solemnly.
"I think you might want to sit down for this." Jinx spoke slowly. Ekko lost his laughter too, sensing the shift in moods. Caitlyn softly seated herself on the edge of Vi's old dinged up couch. Cait pointed towards the kitchen.
"Uhm...can you..please..how? What's going on here?" Caitlyn asked, shakily. Jinx looked into the kitchen with concern. She looked back at Caitlyn with the same concern. Jinx shook her head.
"This isn't a good idea. It's far too soon." Jinx pleaded.
"But she has to know." The voice said.
"Maybe..I should go.." Ekko stepped towards the door. Jinx gave him a look that Caitlyn was shocked by. Jinx silently and selfishly asked Ekko to stay. Cait didn't know Jinx was capable of depending on others. A lot must've changed. Ekko sighs and jumps over the back of the couch to flop into the seat next to Cait.
"If you want her to know, you do it." Jinx said, finally putting her foot down. She jumps into the seat next to Ekko and stares steadily at the ground.
"You little rat, I swear I'll-" Caitlyn stood up and walked slowly towards the kitchen. She swallowed hard and approached the doorway of the kitchen. Caitlyn kept her eyes on the floor, too scared to look up.
"You cut your hair, cupcake." She spoke softly. Caitlyn closed her eyes yet raised her head. She opened her eyes to face her ghost head on.
"You died, Vi."
