for year's i lived alone. no one to keep me company except the shadows that danced around me. they almost seemed to take care of me in a way, seeing as though they were always around.

life without my parents was dismal. they were the only people who understood and shared my gift. they taught me everything i knew.

i hated every second of the life that i lived now. there was nothing to look forward to, no one to share my thoughts with besides the darkness of my room. i desperately tried to get through each day, wondering what i did to deserve this life.

recently, there had been mysterious murders happening in my city.

apparently, some psychopath with pasty skin and a carved smile had been seen leaving the house of his victims.

the people on the news seemed frightened, except i was unfazed.

not much scared me anymore. nothing could be more horrifying than having to experience your parents getting beat to death.

it was the middle of march, so the weather outside was nice and fairly cool. perfect to go out for the night.

i unlocked the front door and stepped outside, closing my eyes and breathing in the fresh spring air.

i walked down the sidewalk towards the woods—my usual spot.

entering the woods, i walked for a couple of minutes till i reached a small clearance with a bench in the middle.

the ground was covered in lush grass and the start of spring blossoms. it hadn't rained for about a week now, so thankfully everything was dry.

i decide to sit on the ground, favoring the soft grass over the old wood bench. i smooth my skirt out around me and shiver a little, wishing I hadn't forgotten my cardigan at home.

the darkness around me was comforting—almost like a big blanket surrounding me and keeping me safe. while typical people wouldn't be able to see in the dark, it was easy for me. i could see all the tall, swaying trees around me, and how their leaves rustled and shook.

it was the perfect time for me to practice.

i slowly closed my eyes, resting my arms on my thighs with open palms to the sky. i breathed out, feeling the heat welling up in me. it was like a rush, leaping up into my insides and burning me from within. begging to be let out.

i released the darkness inside me in one swift burst, escaping from my open palms into the night sky.

in the air, it twisted and contorted in no particular way. that is until i waved a hand in the air, commanding the darkness to move as i desire. it spiraled and spun, looking like a vortex. a never-ending vortex so dark it consumed anything in its path.

the world around me was plunged into a misty darkness, somehow making the night appear darker than it had before.

the darkness began to swirl around my form, with me at the center of it commanding it at will. the wind picked up a bit, kicking up leaves from the grass and causing them to float in the air.

this was true bliss to me. at least the closest to happiness i have felt since my parents were murdered. there was no one here to bother me, no one to speak to. just me, nature, and my shadows.
