Go to sleep," Kestrelkit huffed.

"Sleep is for the weak!" Salmonkit meowed stubbornly.

"Then I am very, very weak," Kestrelkit yawned.

"Yes, you are," Salmonkit told his sibling.

The small stone den was completely dark, as usual, pale moonlight glimmering through a hole in the ceiling.

Salmonkit's sister, Falconkit, was already asleep, and Kestrelkit was clearly not far from falling asleep.

Their papa, Flameglow, stirred. "Go to sleep, Salmonkit!"

Salmonkit winced at the tired edge to Flameglow's mew. He seemed so tired all the time now days.

"Yes, papa," he meowed reluctantly.

Contrary to his name, Salmonkit didn't look anything like a salmon.

He was a mottled ginger tabby like his father, but his mismatched eyes set him apart from Flameglow.

Salmonkit had no idea why he'd been named Salmonkit. It was a bit of a stupid name, really, he thought.

His siblings all had the names of birds of prey, except for him- he was named after a StarClan cursed fish.

He should've been named Rockkit, since he was so stubborn, he purred, watching as his littermates tussled.

Flameglow wearily padded out of the nursery and into the main cavern. "Good morning!" Salmonkit told his father.

"Flameglow!" Someone yowled cheerfully.

Brackenstar bounded over from his den and nuzzled his mate and kit.

Brackenstar pulled back, his green eyes (that were so much like Owlflight's) wide with concern. "Honey? The light of my life, the sun to my moon? Are you...okay?"

Salmonkit peered closer at Papa and noticed he was way thinner than Daddy. Oh, no.

"Have you eaten anything?" Brackenstar asked anxiously.

"I'm not hungry!" Flameglow protested. "Besides, I'm fine, moonlight. I'll eat later, promise."

Brackenstar looked a little less anxious. "Please do."

Flameglow licked his mate's muzzle. "Don't worry, moonshine. I won't be leaving you for a while yet."

The two twined their tails, and Salmonkit decided to leave. Their cuteness was giving him the ick.

He saw Leopardfrost and her girlfriends curled up asleep on a ledge nearby.

It was a cute scene. Leopard frost's tail was draped protectively over Rivershadow, while her head rested on Snowfire's back.

The trio had been up all night doing the nightly patrol, and they deserved some cuddle time.

Purring, Salmonkit wandered around the main cavern, passing the empty elder's den and the passage to the outside world.

He was very curious about what the outside was like, but he knew it was too dangerous to go out alone as a kit.

He shuddered as he pictured an eagle sinking its yellow talons into his shoulders. He didn't want to get mummified today, thank you very much.

But he was very very bored.

And he didn't know where his littermates were. So he decided to explore one of the small tunnels branching off from the main cavern.
